they are great

No 4k tho. Has only 8GB storage which is not expandable unless you connect a USB OTG device or adaptor

Specs. Intel Quad core. 1GB DDR3 ram. 8GB storage.

Runs Kodi Builds great.

https://www.engadget.com/2014/11/03/google-nexus-player-review/

Voice remote is great. The voice remote is included and is slightly better than the one with the Nvidia Shield and the Fire TV.

Runs Android TV OS. have updated mine to the Android TV Beta 7.0

bargain and highly recommend

Anyone know if these are capable of x265? Looks promising but would love to know how they compare to the s905/s905x 2gb models.

Anyone know?

these should run better. it's Android TV vs full Android. it's the same OS as the Nvidia Sheild. can also buy the controller for 29.99 on eBay for games. under Asus Nexus controller.
#3
does it allow installation of kodi and if so does it work smoothly?
#4
Not really great, Android TV is slowly dying and add in the better boxes that can be bought for half this price makes this a no go.

Sorry.

I'd disagree with that. none of these cheep boxes have Android 7 support like this. if google were abandoning this they would not be releasing a big update for it. there is a new nexus player imminent and a new Nvidia shield

I said slowly dying, i am not knocking the system but it just isn't up to the task like the rest of them for the price. Android 7 wont make this any better than what you can already get on the market for the same or less.

Except this will do Netflix HD unlike the bargain basement android boxes. And a few other things besides. Sorely tempted to replace the fire stick.

What else is better for the price?
these cheep boxes and sticks that can get from China for half the price are unreliable. the remotes don't do voice recognition or work with integrated OS like Android TV.
Spec wise yes there are better for less. but this is reliable. It will receive updates unlike the cheep boxes. I also bought a Madcatz Mojo box prior this that did support 4k. But support had been dropped so no OTA updates. had to root and install custom roms.
The Fire OS is locked down on fire sticks. they are limited and only really good if have prime and want to use for Kodi. These have got to be the best and most reliable for the pricd

I have nivida shield got it on prime day if I didn't would get this next on the list

I own a shield as well. Undoubtedly the shield is the king of Android TV with amazing specs. These are a third of the price. And run really well :)

Why? the internals are roughly the same hardware wise. How is this better? Also, can you power it through the TV's USB?

Personally i think the only thing that keep these going is Kodi and that is so unstable, people without knowledge will never know how to update the program list. I didn't vote i actually voted hot as i don't know what these go for and you say it is a deal. I just think they are not worth £50 no matter how many updates you get.

There's a new Nvidia Shield TV coming out?

Many people in this thread seem to be confused by the offering. This is nothing like the cheap android boxes. This is the Android TV operating system and a completely different beast.

The only similarities are the fact that they both run Android.

Nothing unstable about Kodi...it's the crapy addons people install that are unstable.
Kodi has been around long before the buggy pirate TV plugins and will hopefully out live them.
I think the future of Android TV though lies in TV's running Android as the OS, as per the current Sony and Phillips range, hopefully TV manufacturers will stop making such a pigs ear of it soon....

any Bluetooth controller will work. I even use a otg USB -> SNES adapter -> original SNES controllers. I do have the Asus controller and found it pairs with other devices.

i have both, also got my shield on prime day. I had issues seeing up the shield but once done, the shield is far superior. easy faster, better games selection, shield controller doesn't have the same lag, harmony remote response is also far better.

they are way more stable now. in the beginning I had loads of issues. Plex support is awesome, they pay a lot of attention to android TV.

This won't do Netflix 4k because it does not have hdmi 2.0 or hevc. Only 1gb ram. Old model. 4k needs hardware to be able to support it. Better buy nvidia shield tv if you want to run 4k.

It is not same as nvidia shield. Shield has far superior specs and 4k and hdmi 2.0 output. This was state of art once, now 4-5 yrs old with poor specs.

I don't know what you're basing that on but I've run Kodi on Windows and Android devices with only 1gb of ram just fine for 1080p content. It's designed for use on 1gb systems so I have no idea what sucks about your experience with it.

have just bought one, put kodi on, runs fab, 1080p no probs (avatar 25 gig mkv) for £50 its better than anything in this price bracket. also whoever said this the remote for this is BETTER than the nvidia shield, obviously has never have an nvidia shield remote. whilst functional the nexus remote is plasticy and hollow, but who cares at £50 it works very very well.......

I've had a fire stick and a and a ouya there both slow as streaming even with 38mb internet

Tempted as I am, I just can't press the button. I believe voice search works with plex on this which is tempting. But its also a dying box.. Heat for the deal but I just can't sell it to myself

Hi guys would you recommend this or the Amazon fire TV 4k?
Edit: I'm not too fussed about 4k but Cex are selling both at a similar price, not sure which to go for?

I think this might be a better deal. It cost £10 more but you do get a BT game controller worth £20+ with the deal. Also the Tegra 4 that comes with the device is more powerful than the "1.8 GHz Quad Core, Intel® Atom™ Imagination PowerVR Series 6 Graphics 2D/3D Engine" chip that comes with the Nexus Player.

I've bought a silly amount of boxes over the years from Fire boxes to many many Android boxes.

Chinese Android boxes - Have superb specs, but are let down with software. I have at least four that state 4k but can't because something wasn't agreed at the hardware level (A night of searching discovered the other day) and therefore its something that can't ever be fixed

Fire sticks(I hate wifi as it's always ****, and when things don't work you blame it, but if you don't use it in the first place then you can miss out that avenue) So it's always boxes rather than sticks

Fire Boxes - You can do what you want with them, the remote is one of the best I've ever used, simple is always best. 4k (4k is still pissy with TV's with anti piracy crap etc) I suggest everyone looks into 4k just to see if your 4k tv actually gets it.

Btw this is a very drunk review of a totally different product that is actually better (And I dont work for amazon, and haven't had a freebie of them (yet)

Chinese Android boxes are garbage because of the software. Hardware wise they aren't that bad. If the boxes are not locked down and allow 3rd party developers to work on them (think FreakTab) they can be OK systems.

But the best bet is getting something that is well supported and documented. Because when official support for a device ends, someone will be able to compile the software for it, keeping the device unofficial updated.

I have an Amazon 4k box and would never consider swapping it for one of these.
