If you care about audio quality over multiroom buy a £5 white nowtv box. Google's dac and sound hardware implementation is dreadful as the sound is harsh and thin eww.

Never heard of this, interesting.

I have a couple of dormant nowtv boxes, might have to google this one, cheers

Google's chromecast audio measured fine when tested http://archimago.blogspot.co.uk/2016/02/measurements-google-chromecast-audio.html Sounds decent to me, too. I've compared the analogue output of mine to music playing from its digital output through a DAC and to the same music playing through a soundcard - the chromecast's analogue output sounded good.

Of course, if you've got NowTV boxes floating round spare, or can buy cheap, you'd save a few £s :)

Not heard of casting music to now TV boxes. How is it done?

Wasn't this £15 from Currys in a previous bank holiday sale this year?

It was £15 last time, and the time before it was £15 before someone else started selling it for £15 so Currys sold it for £14

Please can you explain further as I have one of these boxes.
Thanks

Surely you're comparing the NowTV to the HDMI Chromecast, not this audio version? if not, then I'd also be very interested as i have spare white boxes around the place.

It's been said before, but for the benefit of those who haven't tried and to which this applies...

Chromecast audio (CCA) can offer a marked improvement over headphone out on a lot of smartphones (likely due better dac or more appropriate output voltage). I even prefer the quality over the headphone amp on my marantz amp (although not surprising when you look into typical specs).

Turn the CCA volume down and plug headphones into the jack of the CCA. Start casting music, adjust the volume to suit and enjoy.

This was the case for me with beyerdynamic dt770 pro 80ohm. Your mileage may vary, as they say

this won't work for video streams, this version is audio only.

Thinking about going the Chromecast route and building speakers into the ceiling and wall.

Anyone recommend any speakers for this? I see they have to be active, unless powered by an external amp, which could be an issue for in wall and ceiling speakers I think.

Have you enabled high dynamic range on the Google Cast app when setting it up? I makes a massive difference if you're getting tinny sound.

+1 - sounds excellent to me on quite a high end system - are you using low bit rate MP3s because their deficiencies will readily show..?

Fine for me too. Running through a yamaha amp and Boston acoustics speakers it's perfectly adequate for my non-audiophile ears

Not had a problem with the ones I have. Only disappointment is that you can't desktop Spotify to them

You can plug chromecast into any speaker that has a 3.5mm socket on it and is powered (i.e.an active speaker). Nothing special required as long as u have wi-fi in your house..

This is nonsense, they sound great.

Can you add the Google Cast speaker to a multiroom setup? Was looking at picking up a cheap LG H3 which support google cast, but i didn't think it could join a chromecast multi-room group.
#34
Yup they sound awful and tinny out of the box until you set the 'full dynamic range' setting to On.

Sounds great through my amp and 25-years old but still good Wharfedale speakers.

Cold though as I thought the going "cheap price" for these was £15, not £20

Hey, this probably doesn't belong in this thread but Freepostcodelottery have a referral deal where if you sign up to Quidco through them and spend £10+ pounds you get £10 cashback on both Quidco and freepostcodelottery. So £20 total cashback. I just used it on this to potentially get a free chromecast audio after cashback :) (+ measly 1% Quidco cashback on top of that)
Worth a shot, hope this helps others
