I bought a tin at Tesco Bradford, to put away & was very pleased to find it was only a penny, quite a few tins left.

Don't forget to take it to self serve, the staff can take this off you at the till as should be removed from the shelves once it hits 1p............good find but what is it for???
What section did you find it in?
good find but what is it for???

Yes, what is it for?? cakes?
chestnut puree can be used in stuffings etc as a binder if unsweetened.

Sweetened, it is often used in with cream or chocolate in cakes. If you bake - an excellent desert is a swiss roll (as in bake your own) but filled with a layer of this and whipped cream.

It was on the same row as the jellies & rice puddings.

Thank you I'll have a look
love it (& whole vac packed chestnuts in stir fry's etc) ..merchant gourmet do some nice products,
Ive just come back from Madeira. They use chestnut for all kinds of things. Cakes, biscuits, soup & even liquor but we also had steak with a creamy chestnut sauce which this might be used for.
something new everyday !
This would probably be ideal in a home made curry too. While I do tend to prefer making the more spicier curries, this would be perfect for a tikka masala / korma.

Shame the only Tesco's near me is one of the express ones, and will will probably never stock this.

Still... a good deal if you can get it.
chestnuts used to be a staple over here, now sadly neglected, except by those deemed foodies / foragers.
Luckily mainland europe (ie not us) still uses alot of this stuff, the sweet puree paste in metal tubes used to be delicious, used to be very cheap too! ..(used to)
nice flavour & texture addition to a lot of cooking.
We managed to pick some up last night from Tesco at Pitsea!
