Scarface
A remake of the 1932 classic, Al Pacino stars as Tony Montana, a Cuban exile who becomes a gangster against the backdrop of the 1980's boom. After going to Florida to work for drug lord Robert Loggia, Montana begins to climb the ranks of Florida's crime chain, to become head of his own criminal empire. As Tony becomes more and more successful, his greed and lust for power threaten to destroy everything in his criminal empire.

Taxi Driver
Considered to be one of the most powerful films in motion picture history, Taxi Driver provoked fierce controversy upon release, running into censorship problems in America as a result of scenes of violence, in addition to the outcry of a 13-year-old Jodie Foster co-starring as a prostitute. Academy Award nominated for Best Film, Best Actor (ROBERT DE NIRO) and Best Supporting Actress (JODIE FOSTER).

Casino
Sam "Ace" Rottstein (Robert De Niro) is riding high as front man for the MOB's multi-billion dollar Las Vegas operation. With Ace's boyhood pal, hot headed enforcer Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci) it's a winning hand, until sexy wild card Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone) turns up the heat. Casino is a dizzying look beyond the closed doors and behind the eyes of the men and women whose fortunes - and lives - were made and lost with a roll of a dice.

Donnie Brasco
The true story of an FBI agent (Johnny Depp) who becomes Donnie Brasco, "The Jewel Man" to infiltrate on of the mob families. Donnie manoeuvres his way into the confidence of ageing hit-man, Lefty Ruggiero (Al Pacino) who trusts Donnie and vouches for him to the mob. But Lefty and Donnie become friends when they should be enemies. As Donnie moves deeper and deeper into the Mafia chain of command, he realises he is not only crossing the like between federal agent and criminal but it also leading his friend Lefty to an almost certain death sentence.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
A bunch of East End lads get in over their heads when they lose all their cash in a rigged game of poker. Somehow they get caught between vicious gangsters and violent drug dealers, with nothing but their wits and a pair of antique rifles to protect them...

Goodfellas, Mean Streets, godfathers, Scarface (1932), Gloria & Killing of A Chinese Bookie by Scorsese's teacher and a few others not Greatest? Or couldn't get the royalties for cheap? Others make it a hot deal at that price though.

I got lost somewhere in the middle of what you were saying.:?

I think you are saying Lock Stock is bobbins, but the others in the collection are great!??!?!

Regarding Lock Stock....it's a decent film (IMO), and it's good to see a British film sandwiched amongs the American offerings

So, are you a professional gangster or a professional gangster film addict?

LGF is a great movie also. Mona Lisa?????

Mona Lisa's better than Friday but more of a search movie. If stretching the genre boundaries the last one below, a family play without action is probably best.

Great collection of films however you look at it. Personally I'm not keen on Casino but love the other four. Horses for courses... ;-)

How is Taxi Driver a gangster movie? No Goodfellas?
#11
ok can people stop the quibbling?

the fact is these are universal releases, so this is just the movies they own.

and they are just part of the ''greatest ever'' range - its all subjective, but these are great steelbooks.

actually most of them are around £17 so with discounts are £15.30 - and i know thehut were selling the Urban one for £12.93 before discounts.

i have pretty much all of these steelbook sets being a fan of them (only need costume dramas 1 and 2 for full set).

Get over yourself...you don't own this place!

Casino is absolute tripe btw, should have been Goodfellas instead...otherwise a good collection.

Don't get me wrong, everybody's got an opinion but to say Casino is tripe tells people that you don't really watch a lot of 'proper' films or understand them at least.

correct me if i'm wrong, but taxi driver is about a taxi driver, not a gangster

you're not wrong.
Travis Bickle is nothing like a Gangster. He is a loner, not in a 'family' for one thing.

Why don't you buy the boxset and then throw Taxi Driver away? That way it will be a pure "gangster" boxset?

I didn't like Casino when it first came out too. But the fact is films like goodfellas and casino are just a little tiny bit more realistic and in the case of those based on real stories. It makes them depressing and seedy and you should not expect more from a cesspool setting. Frankly the pleasures of gangster movies are very childish compared to other masterpieces which are usually in other genres and found in the older European and American titles. BTW the guy played by De Niro in casino who ran the books for the families in Vegas before the real mob (corporations) took over, died a few months ago in Florida. Henry Hill (goodfellas) is still creeping about somewhere under WPP. Paul Schrader wrote Taxi driver when he left an AFI post after fighting a few old masters foolishly and was almost down and out and drunk living in his VW on the road and based it on a few great films which no one has picked up on yet. It basically has a warped subjective autobiography POV and a film noir.
