In GLADIATOR, Russell Crowe plays Maximus, a Roman general who leads the troops in conquering Germania for the empire. When an aging Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) tells Maximus that he'd like him to rule Rome once he's gone, a classic confrontation ensues between the brave and charming soldier--who wants to return home to his wife, son, and farm--and the jealous and conniving Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the emperor's only son, who is thirsty for power. Bought as a slave by the profiteering Proximo (Oliver Reed, in his last role), Maximus must kill or be killed in the ring, battling to save not only himself but the future of the very empire that he loves and honours.

IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER is a drama based on the Guildford pub bombings. Gerry Conlon fights for justice for himself and his family.

Set in early 1980s Apartheid-era South Africa, CATCH A FIRE is a gripping political thriller based on a remarkable true story. Patrick Chamusso is a family man who works as a foreman at the Secunda oil refinery. Although he tries his best to stay out of politics, he is dragged in when Colonel Nic Vos wrongly believes that Chamusso is a prime suspect in a terrorist bombing that occurred at the plant. Despite being brutally beaten and tortured, Chamusso continues to declare his innocence, but the situation changes drastically when the Police Security Branch brings in his wife, Precious. Faced with some hard choices, Chamusso starts listening to radio broadcasts by the illegal African National Congress, an organisation of freedom fighters seeking to end apartheid, and decides it's finally time to fight back.

In PHILADELPHIA, Tom Hanks plays Andrew Beckett, a hotshot Philadelphia lawyer who has been keeping his homosexuality, and his AIDS, hidden from his conservative bosses. When he's suddenly and inexplicably fired, Andrew suspects AIDS is the reason, and is determined to fight in court, even as he is losing his other battle, against the disease. Beckett hires attorney Joe Miller (Denzel Washington) to represent him, but the lawyer must first overcome his own homophobia and fears.

In THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, City Banker Andy Dufresne is in Shawshank State Prison after receiving a double life sentence for murder. There he meets Red and also forms friendships with the warden and prison guards. Andy soon finds that you either get on with living or you get on with dying.

The price is therefore £7.24, which is still a bargain.

The closing track, PHILADELPHIA by Neil Young is haunting. Better than the Bruce Springsteen "Streets of Philadelphia" which as I recall won the Oscar that year.
