Reviewer: steve ross "xvid" (USA) - See all my reviews
What a well made little bit of kit. Far more solid than anything apple or archos have made so far.

Don't be fooled by the grundig name on the machine, this machine is a Toshiba and uses Toshiba super fast access micro hard drives currently the fastest in the world.
i work in the electronics sector so i know a fair bit about electronics.

Japanese and German engineering at its very best.

This machine is the bmw/ Mercedes of the "pvr" world bar none.
With so many machines to choose from why pick this?

First of all codexs, this machine can play all divx/xvid/mp4 movies without the need to convert. Something my apple and archos gave me headaches over.

Secondly true crisp picture, astounding good picture quality on lcd or tv screen playback is sharp and crisp fantastic picture control. The software engine in this pvr has great control over playback and thus the picture quality is excellent on big screen.

Thirdly easy to use menu system, just go left or right to find what you need simple.

Fourthly build quality is excellent. Light weight but solid fits in pocket easy.

Fifth built in camera for snaps and digital recording no other pvr has this feature I know of.

Sixth the accessories that comes with it such as leather case strap headphones docking station and screen cleaner.

Any body wanting 30 gig of very fast access then this is it far quicker than any other pvr out there it can play everything a solid performer all round. Only a fool would buy an archos or any other pvr after seeing this one.
5/5

From Amazon review.

---------------------------------------------

Must say for £120 this is a stonking bit of kit.
Plays divX and Xvid, so can put on full movies usually about 700Mb (0.7Gb) in size.
With 30Gb to play with you wont get bored on any journeys.
Theres even a radio and a camera on it.

Not sure on the size of it, so not sure if its quite chunky or not.
The screen size is about average, 3.5", think my PSP's 4.5" but its widescreen so its squashed a bit.

I'd find out the size specs first, but a lot of people dont bother.
30Gb mp3 and divX/Xvid player for £120.
Wont get a better deal anywhere.

Heat and rep added.

The range of features on offer here is nothing if not impressive. This PMP/media jukebox/call it what you will from Grundig pumps out music, shows off your digital photos and plays back videos. As well as all this, there’s a built-in camera that can be used for taking 1.3-megapixel snaps or shooting video straight to the 30GB hard drive.

Video is excellently done. Loaded up with some DivX-encoded episodes of Invasion, the silky-smooth playback really impressed. Its bright, sharp 4:3 screen is outstanding, and it does a stellar job with photos, too.

Music support isn’t quite up to the same standard. You can play MP3 and standard WMA files, but not protected tracks such as those from the iTunes store. Playback is slightly disappointing, with tunes such as The Heathen by Bob Marley lacking the finesse you hear on a player such as the Creative Zen Vision:M.

The washed-out snaps and jerky video from the camera are Second Division stuff too, but the real drawback is the menu system, which rapidly becomes as irritating as a never-ending loop of Joe Pasquale reading the shipping forecast. The worst of its many foibles is that you can only access music tracks via a simple file browser, so there’s no way to quickly search for songs by artist or title.

The big competitor to this product is the Archos AV 500, which costs around £20 less. The Archos is more polished and can record video from an external source such as a DVD player or set-top box, although there’s no camera.

So while the screen and video playback are excellent, the low quality camera and iffy menu system mean we’d opt for the cheaper Archos model.

This is an INCREDIBLE deal. £99 delivered! Crazy. Had to register on this forum just to say that. I have to Cowon A2 and this is basically the same. You'd expect to pay £180+ for something like this normally. Voted hot.

i think u can buy some kind of adapter so u can transfer movies/pictures from your digi camera read it somewhere but cant find link to it !?
#9
The second quote says this will not be able to record from a freeview box?

Does anyone know for sure?

surely if it has a line in you should be able to?
#10
It looks like this has three phono type plugs at the end of the line in / out, so if your Freeview box has the sockets then it will work. If not and it has a scart out, then buy an adapter from Maplin (few quid at most). Nevertheless, I've looked at the Grundig site and it a little ambiguous regarding this, why can't they just show us the reverse of kit? http://www.grundig-uk.co.uk/productdetails.aspx?pid=VP6200&language=en-GB&md=alt

There is a rather large thread on MSE regarding this player which will probably answer any questions you have. Unfortunately, their forums are down for maintenance at the moment.

I use the Archos 404 for recording TV programmes and recording from DVD & Video. If you can do exactly the same from the Grundig then it is well worth it. You can record all those old VHS tapes to the player and store the files on a harddrive. You may have to buy extra software, I did for the Archos, to support the copying of DVDs, but it is only around £7.00 to download.
I think that these players are great because you can take your TV programmes with you.

want one but aint got the £99 :(

Hi

I bought two of these direct from Grundig in January for £99 each, nice unit, good screen, average sound, fiddly controls.

Sadly I had to return them both as they started to skip and freeze up when playing back files recorded directly from the TV. This is a common problem with the software and renders the unit useless. There is no firmware upgrades available either as Grundig are washing there hands of it, hence the low price.
#16
Mine also has to be sent back due to a hard drive problem. Im gutted as it really is a good piece of kit at an affordable price.

Im going to get it replaced and give it another try!
#17
I want something portable I can connect to 2 incar screens (saves taking dvd player and loads of discs), use as a video recorder/player when on hols on a full size tv. would this do?
#18
I have one of these, and it's been fine. Admittedly I've never recorded off the TV/DVD etc, but it's been absolutely fine for playing back stuff. I have heard of the skipping problem mentioned before, but not seen it myself. Yes, it's bit clunky, but for £99 it's a bargain. Should be able to replace HD, so looking to stick in 120GB model. These are only £99.99 from the Grundig website though.

Altogether now, Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!:whistling:
#21
i had one of these and had to send it back as it kept switching itself off during playback of some of my divx videos.....

then bought an archos av500 but took that back as the archos support was rubbish as the power unit was faulty but when i sent it to them they sent the exact same one back to me so it was still faulty......

the av500 does have better support, better battery life, does not take as long to charge, has an infrared emitter to control your sky box etc, better software......

the grundig is cheaper, supports more codecs without having to purchase anything, comes with better quality accessories, wider bottom allowing the unit to be freestanding...... wish they released the firmware to the public so someone can do their own homebrew software......

also checkout here as this was posted a while back:

hmmm this or an refurb ipod 5g 30gb for £129 or 60gb for £175

I got one of these back in Janurary, I really only use it to watch movies on, I record them direct from dvd player in the evening & watch them at work the next day (yes, very boring job). I don't know the total capacity movie wise, I have got 15 movies saved on mine. Just make sure you get a swichable scart (see pic below) which you can get from ebay for about £3 - £4. You can then plug it into a dvd player, sky box, freeview box to record. When recording, connect your cables & go into video record, hold in the munu button & change video in from 'camera' to 'line', then you will see the picture you want to record. Also in the menu you can set the timer for the length you want it to record for. Plug it into your pc (I didn't need to load any software) & change the file names to the movie names - simple!

The radio isn't great, I did manage to get Radio 1 once while I was in my mates flat.

If you want to know anything else just pm me.

Is there a timer function so you can set it to record in say 2 hours whilst your out?
#25
To be honest, I bought one of these units at £119 before christmas and was not very impressed with it, it was picky as to what divx files it played, if you used the converter software the quality of the video is not great.

The incorporated camera is not worth having and finally my unit developed a fault where it would turn itself off half way through playing a movie so ended up sending it back for a refund.

Alos expect a long wait to get a response from Grundig took two months to retunr mine!!
#26
Spend a bit more to get an Archos - it is far better in every way.
#27
I have owner a few Archos players, the most recent being the AV400 and the AV700. I loved the AV400 and used to use it on long flights, waiting for flights (well you get the idea) I found the 700 was too big and clumsy and compared to the 400 felt fragile.

Archos also have very good customer service and my first archos developed a fault, I purchased it in the USA and really it was not covered but they replaced it with a new unit anyway.

They also provide a lot of firmware updates when needed.

Basically I'd buy an Archos over this any day.

I have got this player and use windows XP can anybody tell me where I can find drivers for it.

As far as backup from Grundig be warned I have sent loads of email requesting the above and they don't even bother to reply.
#33
Did you not get an installation CD 'Driver and utilities manuals' with the PMP, wrepete? I use the PMP with windows XP, no probs.
I think driver installation is automatic with XP - only need to install on windows 98.
#34
should be just plug and play, no drivers required..
#35
yeh it was a mass storage device on windows xp.... installed drivers automatically...

This is my first post but just had to share.

Just bought this nifty little player with some portable speakers for £99 from Toys 'R' Us, didn't know if I had made a good buy so was looking for reviews (or back to the shop for a refund).

I've no idea what the speakers are like, and have not even charged the player yet, but here's some details:

Grundig GUSP600 Multimedia Speaker, 4 watt output, runs on mains via adaptor or batteries.
#37
Reckon you got a good deal if you got some portable speakers with it for £99.
The unit has it's own speakers which are quite quiet but if you use earplugs supplied sounds great.
The user guide booklet is not that informative but there is a decent manual on the cd provided.
Have a look at the posts from Xmas by clicking on link provided by rednapj, further up this page (post #32), for some good advice to using the unit and to see how to overcome possible issues. There are quite a few of the HUKD members who bought this media player and I'm sure would try to help you.
