Thick, knobbly tyres and lots of gears are the overriding features of these machines. Strong frames are built to take the rough with the smooth and can often be accompanied by a front suspension fork for added comfort and control. Theyre designed mainly for off road use but these solid, comfortable bikes often meet more general needs.

Does the company you work for do the cycle to work scheme? Another way of getting a good deal.

I'm 6ft also and weigh 15st and it is the best I have found so far, I will only be using it for road and light trail riding to lose weight myself, unless your going you're planning on going fast, downhill extreme rugged terrain i'd have thought you'd be ok

Just walk if you want to lose weight, and eat less .

If you're just going to ride on the road and cycle tracks, it's well worth switching to some slick tyres. Made a massive difference on my bike. Maybe worth considering a hybrid. Good luck with the weight loss.

I have the GT myself, but I wish I had known about the 8.1 Rockrider before I bought mine. http://www.decathlon.co.uk/81-2011-id_8168695.html

That rock rider posted by mac dory is a cracking spec bike for the money.

I have the 2010 version of this with some Schwalbe Road Cruiser tyre (1.75 jobs).
It's not the lightest bike going but it's tougher than any other bike I've had.
Stood up to some 4ft drop offs with clumsy landings with only minor buckles to the wheels.

Watch out for the pedals though, if they are anything like the stock ones on my bike theya are rubbish.

I am reasonably fit 6ft 4ins and just under 14 stone (88kgs). I find that cycling and walking do not reduce my weight. If anything they increase weight. The only way I can lose weight is to eat less. If you go hungry for a few days your stomach shrinks and you no longer feel the urge to eat. Certain foods are very bad for weight gain. I do not eat any sweets, but find that nuts are absolutely terrible for putting on weight. Brazil nuts are the worst, so no longer eat them. Peanuts are pretty bad as well.

That might be because muscle weighs more than body fat and peanuts are about 50% fat so they are not the best thing to eat if you are trying to lose weight!

Don't buy a mountain bike if your cycling on roads to work. Get a hybrid or road bike.
This bike says the best brakes yet the are mechanical and not hydraulic.

I cycle to work most days and I previously used a mountain bike. It annoyed me the amount times other cyclists would overtake me, so I decided to plump for a hybrid (Dawes 301 discovery) and now I do the overtaking....unless they are on a proper road bike.

I take my hybrid on tow paths with no problems. I would only go back to a mountain bike if I was to do some proper offroad riding.

Lost 35kgs myself. Losing weight is 90% diet, and is pretty much completely about the calories in vs calories out. Sign up to my fitness pal, or any other similar site and track your calories and weight will drop off if you are strict.

Cardio is great to keep your heart healthy and riding a bike is good fun, but not essential for weight loss. I avoid eating back the calories from exercise as calories estimates are pretty inaccurate with websites and even heart rate monitors.
