How the TDP on these, will it eat significantly more electrical energy then an Intel counterpart? Although not sure what Intel at this price point.
Voted hot bin rocking one of these for 4 years and paired with 6970, bf3 flies as does neverwinter D&D which is my current fave games.
Regarding gaming.

Since the PS4's GPU now handles most if not all of the physics rendering, which was previously forced upon the CPU; I imagine PCs have been doing the same thing for a long while, or will do so very quickly.

Meaning the CPU shouldn't be as much of an issue if you get an up to date graphics card now.

Excellent CPU, but i'd advise going with something a little more recent for a new build. For an upgrade however, this is spot on.
Very good price for this CPU. Even though it's old and not in production anymore, it's still a solid CPU for the money. It's been floating around £70 for a while but needs to be this sort of price point now seeing as the FX CPU's have had some price cuts recently.

Cheapest yet, seem like amazon price match with ebuyer AX860 non "i" version instead of AX860i. Ebuyer AX860 http://www.ebuyer.com/410789-corsair-ax860-80plus-platinum-high-performance-860w-pow…

forgive me for my ignorance, but what's the differences between this and a normal PSU for £20-30 ?

better rated components, better power efficiency so you save money, better fans so its quieter

+ full modular, 7 years warranty and reliability.

Nothing wrong with cheap £20-30 psu, but should be avoided in high performance pc or OC'ed system.

£20 cheaper than the one posted earlier, yet so much colder.

i made a lot of enemies here :p
Great deal, hot!

Btw, I love people who have no idea about products (hi end in most cases) and vote cold just because it's expensive... Oo
If only they would knock a corresponding amount off the price of the AX760i. Hot, though I doubt that price will last long.

Yeah, its the people who have no knowledge about these things that are voting this cold.

the only time you would need an 850w PSU is if you have close to a grands worth of kit in your machine. show it some respect and buy a decent one :)

£40 for an 800w+ PSU? You are brave!

They certainly are although it can be done:

no but a £40 one will do the same job

LOL ok, I wouldn't touch any pc you build then. I'd like to see what £40 850/860w psu your referring to, I'm curious now.

Max cooler height on the silencio is 154 mm, and many are slightly taller and the case foam will get in the way

Thats a very important point and may be a deal breaker for me, I have a Coolermaster evo 212 which is 159mm...
I measured my 430 case externally and found it slightly smaller than the 3000........Plus the Silencio might not meet my cooling needs......

I always seem to find myself in a minefield with bare feet.....

I have the silencio. Check first if using a cooler other than stock or an all in one water loop to make sure the cooler will fit height wise

They do look nice, but i do love that minimalistic look of the Fractal cases

If you can stretch that budget another tenner or so you could pick up the Cooler Master Silencio 550. Quite similar to to the Define R4 but with a friendlier price tag.

The Silencio would be my first choice, as my current 430 is very noisy when watching movies late at night....I have a couple of PWM fans on the way to maybe replace the Corsair fans

Which have supreme airflow but too much noise even when using the resistance cable included to bring down the RPM...
