Pretty sure he'll be talking about the Yamaha F310 :)
How does this compare to the basic Yamaha acoustic guitar (I forget the model) which gets very good reviews and is about £100?

It's difficult to compare without having a model number, particularly for Yamaha as they bring new models out all the time. For around £100, I'm guessing the Yamaha will have a lamitated top (the front of the guitar) instead of a solid wood top, like the Simon & Patrick one I posted. A solid top guitar will always sound better, no matter the ability of the player.

As rehydrated said above, anyone learning is better going for the best guitar they can afford as a lot of cheap(er) guitars can sound poor and put the learner off playing.

Incidentally, I asked for a pricematch from another online music store who 'guaranteed' to beat any price. I received an email back from them apologising that they couldn't beat the price as it was cheaper than they buy the guitar in at!

I have the electro acoustic version of this.
In my opion this is a beautiful instrument.
Looks like a good guitar for the money. People wanting to learn, don't buy a 30 quid guitar, it will just put you off. Invest in something like this. If you can't stick to it, you will get about 200 squid back on it on evilbay if you decide to sell after a few months.

Possibly the best advice I've heard on here - repped for that.

Another alternative, which you can pick up for about £280, is a Freshman Apollo 1. Although the initial outlay is a bit more, they have a much nicer action, and hold their value a bit more than S&P ones (quite a few actually sell for more than new as people sometimes like "played in" ones, providing they've been kept in mint condition).
