Spotted Guns N' Roses (ahem, Axl's) most recent album 'Chinese Democracy' for a mere £1 instore at WHSmith today. They had shelffulls! Mixed reviews... but heck, for only £1 this is a tidy deal IMHO.

Review:
--------
17 years in the making and beholden of a level of hyperbole verging on mythology--one that couldn't even be derailed by Axl Rose staffing his ever-changing troupe with people named Buckethead, Bumblefoot and Brain--Chinese Democracy would disappoint even if it arrived in a puff of smoke and nullified the impact of The Dark Side of the Moon, Revolver and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (not to mention Appetite for Destruction). And it doesn't do that, obviously. In fact, straight off the block it's in danger of rear-ending the Guns N' Roses legend, with the title track offering little beyond big production and "Shackler's Revenge" and "Better" emulating Linkin Park's industrial block building with a guttural vocal that threatens to turn the whole thing into a parody. But a desire to progress the G N' R template finds its feet as "If The World" unfolds into an improbable eastern drum 'n' bass orchestral trip-hop odyssey with some coarse riffing and the attitude of old is run through Pro-Tools and made 21st Century-proof on "Scraped" and "Raid N' the Bedouins". But if this album is to be remembered for anything in particular it will be the sky-reaching ambition of the balladry; "Sorry" with its "Nothing Else Matters" vibe and interlaced vocal choreography is cathartic and proud, "This I Love" sees Axl's larynx stretched and twisted, literally wringing the emotion from within, and "Catcher in the Rye" is one real moment of universal appeal. Chinese Democracy tries to be a lot of things but really works where Axl is left to be Axl and "November Rain" is left sounding like "Kumbaya".

Great album, especially for a quid.

There are a few good tunes on it. Well worth a quid. Have some heat.
#3
Popping by one tomorrow will check it out.

Terrible Terrible album by Axl Rose and Friends.

This album is a complete joke. Go buy Slash's solo album instead.
#5
Go buy a tube of pringles with your quid instead.

Not in the mood for rubbishy crisps, I've got an appetite for destruction.
#7
i think a quid is well over priced for one of the worst albums for years.

Good Album in my opinion

I think 'mixed reviews' is being generous. Pretty rubbish, really. Download the title track...forget the rest.

seriously you can validate that comment right? considering x factor churned dross, the sonic vomit that is anything in the top 10 for past 4 years?!

I loved the leak of Madagascar but the album was pretty poor and a harsh listen due to the terrible dynamic range.

I bought this album when it first came out. Never got into it. Started listening a couple of months later and i listen to this album more than any guns album bar Appetite. Love it. Its definatley a grower.
Robin fincks guitar solo's towards the end of This I Love is epic. Shacklers and Better are great tunes. I love this album.

Slash's Snakepit was great, I really should have bought it.

Think he meant 2010 which had some kick ass tracks on it

this album is worth it, just because buckethead plays on it.
for me, he is technically, the greatest guitarist walking this planet. He was the best replacement for slash. it's a shame that some of his guitarwork is spoilt by the (too) polished prodution.

axl + buckethead = goodtimes.

In the true spirit of HUKD....hot.

But...13 years in the making (according to Wiki) it starts promising, goes quickly downhill & well before the end you're shouting at the caterwauling Axl to shut the feck up.

Saw them at Donnington in '88 & not forgetting the tragic deaths in the crowd (RIP), it was an awesome experience. Couldn't drag me to their gig now tho. If he ever got on stage that is....

There’s no truth in the rumour that this had the working title of Appetite for Studio Time. 20 gazillion pounds to record and £1 to buy, no wonder the music industry is doomed.
#23
If only you could melt a CD to make a bowl, like you could with vinyl. Then it would be £1 well spent.
#24
It's one of those albums that grows on you. I hated it the first time I listend too it, but gave it another couple of chances, and one day, boom, i was in the right mood for it.

I personally love Sorry and this I love off this album.

Hot price... shame I already have it

Was never gonna live up to the hype or expectation, but a damn fine album - BUY IT. 8)

Buckethead is awesome. But Axl is a **** who needs a punch in the face with a brick.
