I've not seen this submitted already so thought I'd share here, there is a new gym chain called The Gym Group, they offer membership from £9.99 a month (prior to opening), rising to £14.99 a month for members joining after they've opened, if you join early enough you can also avoid the £20 joining fee. There is no contract, you can cancel at anytime simply by cancelling your direct debit.

The following gyms are already open: (£14.99 per month + £20 joining fee)
Guildford
Hounslow
Leicester
Liverpool
Manchester
Vauxhall

These gyms open Summer 2010: (Join now and lock in at £9.99 a month and no joining fee)

Birmingham
Brighton
Nottingham
Plymouth
West Hampstead

The gyms offer no frills, i.e. no pool, sauna, steam room, however the are large with brand new equipment and open 24 / 7! You can sign up online, you'll be given a pin number which you use to enter and exit the gym.

Obviously not for everyone, but I hope some of you find this useful.

Edit June 2010 - List of gyms updated.

Q: Is The Gym really open 24 hours 7 days per week?
A: Absolutely!

Q: Will The Gym be staffed 24/7?
A: The Gym will be monitored via extensive CCTV coverage 24/7 with direct links to Emergency Services. Additionally to this, The Gym will be staffed during the hours of 8am-8pm (Mon-Fri) and 10am-5pm (Sat & Sun)

Oh that explains it..

the CCTV system will dial 999 for you when you have a major accident in the gym at 2am just after a night out on the town.

it says on site
Q: How do I cancel my membership?
A: All you need to do is cancel your direct debit with your bank. You do not need to notify us of your cancellation. Please note that your membership will be cancelled immediately then it says in TERMS & CONDITIONS

If any Direct Debit is returned unpaid or any cheque is returned unpaid or if any other form of payment is not
honoured for whatever reason, you shall pay us on demand an administration fee of £20.

so it with cost you £54.99 if you only use the gym acouple of times then cancel it
#9
If you cancel your direct debit they are notified, that is the end of your membership. You aren't charged £20 to cancel.

If you direct debit bounces because you have no money in your account, then you are charged the fee.
#10
They have three other gyms coming soon (although you cannot join these yet) at Leeds, Leicester and Nottingham. Keep an eye on their site.

You'll only be charged if you want to continue your membership. It's quite clear that there is no contract and you can cancel simply by cancelling your direct debit. The £20 is to re-instate the direct debit and your membership.

fabulous! gutted nowt near me!
#14
Given that there is no minimum contract, this is HOT HOT HOT!!!

Wish there was one near me.
#15
Thats really good, about time fitness first had some proper competition!
#16
24/7 is what I need, bring one to Gateshead or Newcastle and I'm there.
#17
Wow looks like great prices for amount of equipment :). Hot.
#18
This is a pretty good deal as a lot of people i know are not renewing their £25+/month memberships with annual contracts. There are a couple of gyms near me which are around the same price as this but with saunas, however the equipment isn't the best and the staff might not as well be working there as they are completely clueless.

The only thing that worries me with these, at unsociable hours, unstaffed 24hr gyms is if someone has an accident or god forbid a heart attack, it could take a while before any first aid gets administered and that could prove fatal. Also what if an argument turns physical and a fight breaks out? I'm guessing that there are disclaimers to sign.

just go during the hours that the staff are on duty?
#20
ooooh, there is a gym down the road from me, 10 minute walk, looks sweet better than the university gym in guildford. but 15 quid is a lot of monies.
#21
Been looking for a gym to go to and for the price and location this looks great, thanks.

The gym looks great

whats to stop 1 person joining and going thru the nite with their mates and all getting in to use the gym, i know therer's cctv if anything goes wrong but surely whoever watches the cameras doesnt know what all their members look like. or you could give your pin number to others to go rather than them buy their own membership, especially if you go thru the day and your mate goes after hours and gets in pretending to be you.

:)
I wasn't thinking of just myself, but was thinking how in general, an environment where the body can be put under physical stress and there potentially being a lot of testosterone flying around, being unsupervised may not be a wise idea.

On the website it says that they do monitor this. Maybe their system flags up unusual usage patterns like the scenario you give. I'm sure a lot would slip through the net though, especially identical twins :D

agreed...wanted to david lloyd but they arent geared up for kids....they say they are but they arent....the cost was crazy.....2 adults, son (8 yrs) and daughter (4)...they wanted £154/mth!!
even the council one was £80/month
at the other end of the scale the nirvana spa was £200/mth for me and the wife plus £750 joining fee
crazy prices..no thanks!
id rather ill buy a shed (eg 20x12) and stick it in the side garden and fill it with decentish gym equipment - would work out cheaper than paying these overpriced muppets for 2 years

Im So Gutted Its Not In East London
#28
The terrible thing about the one in Hounslow is that it's right next to Asda which is also open 24 hours a day, so you have your work-out then you fancy having a cream slice or a mars bar straighrt after, or both..

The gym looks great

its all sweaty and smellyy

not staffed during some hours, sounds dodgy...is that legal....good idea 24x7 and good value by the looks of it...what annoys me about gyms usually is they are rarely up front about the charges....you have to phone them up or visit them
#32
Thanks for this...there is one near me but I recently took up the Virgin Active 50% discount offer
#33
Been using the one in Guildford for the last few months. It's absolutely brilliant.
#34
interested to see how they function overnight hours. what if some mentalist decides to sit in the shower masturbating in his own feaces, throwing them on the walls and people that come in... or more than likely some bellend drops a barbell he can barely press on his throat and no one is there to lift it off... cant imagine someone is watching non stop 24/7 or they would employee a single member of staff to be in the building.

Boots were doing an offer for 50% off Virgin Gym membership if you spent £75 with them. Was meant to last till end of month, but ended within couple of days due to oversubscription :?

Theres a thread on here about it.
#38
In the Hounslow Gym theres a twisting door that only allows 1 person at a time when a pin is entered hence ionly one person can enter with 1 pin.

Well it appears the one in Hounslow is in the same complex as the 24 hr Asda. I imagine they have some sort of arrangement with security. And wouldn't be suprised if they are all similarly located.

Hounslow can be quite rough (although I imagine the pubs and clubs are the spots of choice for most of the mentalists ), but again I suspect they will alter their security arrangements based on the extent of the trouble they have.

WRT the bellend(s), they could equally do the same in their garage gym

I guess you may get away with it for a while, but eventually the CCTV operator may clock on that several people have entered but only one has signed in.

And as for sharing membership, they'll probably pay particular interest to those accounts who spend a higher then average time in the place. If I was implementing the system I'd simply have an alert pop up to the CCTV operator when one of those account holders entered the premises.

I guess if its not heavily abused they may not give a poo. But is it really worth the hassle of getting booted, seems like pretty good value already compared to the competition.
