1998. HALF-LIFE sends a shock through the game industry with its combination of pounding action and continuous, immersive storytelling. Valve's debut title wins more than 50 game-of-the-year awards on its way to being named "Best PC Game Ever" by PC Gamer, and launches a franchise with more than eight million retail units sold worldwide.

NOW. By taking the suspense, challenge and visceral charge of the original, and adding startling new realism and responsiveness, Half-Life 2 opens the door to a world where the player's presence affects everything around him, from the physical environment to the behaviors even the emotions of both friends and enemies.

The player again picks up the crowbar of research scientist Gordon Freeman, who finds himself on an alien-infested Earth being picked to the bone, its resources depleted, its populace dwindling. Freeman is thrust into the unenviable role of rescuing the world from the wrong he unleashed back at Black Mesa. And a lot of people he cares about are counting on him.

The intense, real-time gameplay of Half-Life 2 is made possible only by Source®, Valve's new proprietary engine technology. Source provides major enhancements in:

Characters: Advanced facial animation system delivers the most sophisticated in-game characters ever seen. With 40 distinct facial "muscles," human characters convey the full array of human emotion, and respond to the player with fluidity and intelligence.
Physics: From pebbles to water to 2-ton trucks respond as expected, as they obey the laws of mass, friction, gravity, and buoyancy.
Graphics: Source's shader-based renderer, like the one used at Pixar to create movies such as Toy Story® and Monster's, Inc.®, creates the most beautiful and realistic environments ever seen in a video game.
AI: Neither friends nor enemies charge blindly into the fray. They can assess threats, navigate tricky terrain, and fashion weapons from whatever is at hand.

PC System Requirements Minimum: 1.7 GHz Processor, 512MB RAM, DirectX® 8.1 level Graphics Card (Requires support for SSE), Windows® Vista/XP/2000, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

Recommended: Pentium 4 processor (3.0GHz, or better), 1GB RAM, DirectX® 9 level Graphics Card, Windows® Vista/XP/2000, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

Don't just get HL2. HL2 is just a good game, the orange box, however, is AMAZING!

HL2 = solo piano

ORANGE BOX = orchestra

One of my favourite games of all time.

Very Hot!

And yes, get the Orange Box.

Orange Box is still one of PC Gaming's essentials particularly at the price.

Another vote for the Orange Box here - Half-life 2 is an abolutely fantastic game, Episode 1 and Episode 2 are shorter but still very worthy continuations (don't worry - you'll have plenty of time to get through them before Episode 3 is announced) - HL2 and EP1 have had "achievements" added in the last week for those that like collecting such things (and I'd only got round to finishing Ep1 the week before :x ) Portal is an amazing game - again it is short, but perfectly formed and very polished, and Team Fortress 2 is still the best online multiplayer team game out there - mad, bad and still getting additional play features and enhancements long after its original release.

Half life 2 has just received an update via steam which brings the engine upto episode 1 quality.. It looks rather good too. The problem with this update is that it renders Fake Factory's Cinematic mod useless, well at least for the time being, until they get around to fixing it. So if you're looking to use the mod with Hl2, i'd say its best to grab a non steam copy or keep your fingers crossed that Fake Factory have us in mind and are working on a fix. Where they are or not, theres no info on their website at this current time.

(sorry for the delay.. it's just spending five minutes loading the rest of this sentence. Much like Half Life 2 tends to do every 5 minutes...!!!)

Given that Half-Life 2 never didn't require Steam I'd say that'd be quiet a job.

Just bought Orange Box. Had a few problems with Steam accepting my card. I had to go through "Click & Buy" instead. Well worth it for that price.

That would be the original HL2 bundles(for CS:Source) or the Original Half-Life for Counter-Strike - the Orange Box has never had it...

Quality deal... got this a couple of days ago and sooo worth it... Never though single player FPS would be so enthralling after some of the dizzying heights of CS (and CS:S) multiplayer... Just HL2 is worth it, haven't even got near the episodes yet :-D

Though, you do know everyone with HL2 can get Lost Coast and Deathmatch for free right? Surely that's been the subject of another hotukdeal at some point. It just depends what graphics card you have...

So the only thing really missing from that package is CS:S, DOD:S etc if you're interested... But what more do you want for a tenner
