Bought the Half-life 1 Anthology pack yesterday off Steam. Always wanted to know what actually happened at Black Mesa. Ok it's a bit clunky now but I'm really enjoying it!

Max Payne has been updated to include Max Payne 2 in a bundle for £2.49... after I got the first one for £1.49 :/

The second one is worth more than the extra 50p anyway.

It is, its 33% off at the moment at just over a tenner which is a fantastic buy, although I'd probably buy the Valve complete pack if you haven't bought any game from them before

Most overrated game series of all time IMO

They have got EVE Online (+ a free 30 day sub) aswell, £1.49. It's a pay monthly game though.

Ive been having a lot of trouble trying to play Max Payne on vista, on install theres no sound and you have to download a fix from the official forums to sort it out, easy enough, but now for some reason the game wont run at all and re-downloading it from steam doesnt work.

Just a heads up.

Compared to what else that was out at the time? The story and gameplay still hold up even if the graphics are a little dated.

Let me guess - you think Halo was revolutionary?

Damn, I wish this was the source version of this classic game.

Actually Halo was pretty revolutionary, at the time.

Let me guess - you view view revoltions from a narrow-minded pc-centric pov?

Max Payne games still hold out well despite their age due to their cinematic nature.

Half Life not so well, particularly on these modern 24" monitors, but still find it a good bash on my back up laptop but that's mostly because of the memories that the game has for me. I'm not sure new comers would see it as good of a game and not surprising since it's now a 12 year old game.

Well given that Halo started off the two weapons at a time and regenerating health trends, then yeh id say it was influential if not revolutionary.

Im not sure what half life contributed?

That being said Max Payne is awesome and so is its sequel. However i have NO IDEA whats going on with the third one....

What happened to the whole film noir/ comic book vibe they had going?

I'm not sure how old you are but if you are not sure what Half Life contributed then you appear to have missed out on a major milestone in gaming?

It's true, there are much better looking, more sophisticated games available since Half Life came out but for me very few games match the basics of the original Half Life (I'm not that enthusiastic about the sequels).

Other notable benchmark FPS games for me include:

Far Cry
Stalker

Why does Gordon look so evil on that picture?

When Half-Life arrived it was head and shoulders above the competition; certainly a ground-breaking game.

Have to admit when I first played HL - on my Nvidia Riva 128 video card I wasn't exactly enthusiastic farting around in the locker room wondering what the hell the game was all about and went back to playing Sin.

I got stuck while playing Sin and then decided to give HL another shot and I was hooked!

By this time a mate of mine sent me an Nvidia TNT card and this transformed the performance and look of the game no end! (yes yes we can chuckle now...)

At the time, I just loved the environments and the plot, although nothing special, it certainly immersed you in the action - or that's the way it was back in the late 90's

We used to joke at the office that it was called Half Life because once you started playing it you had half a life as you spent all your spare time in the game!

Deus Ex was a good game and at the time I was living in Hong Kong, so it had portions of the game that inspired me.

I never completed the game at the time but did get round to playing it again a few years back and completing it

There isn't a lot that keeps my interest at the moment other than TF2 and the odd round of CS.

I like the idea of Fallout 3 but it's just too complex/convoluted with all of the options...

I've also started to play Borderlands but it plays very sluggishly on my 8800 GTS based system and it doesn't really excite me either...

I just like a good plot then running around massive environments shooting and blowing up everything that moves - it's not that hard really

Far Cry 2 is a great example of how not to achieve this, although on paper it sounds like it ticks all the boxes...

Half life brought story to the the First Person Shooter genre, it had companions who would follow and assist you, it had advanced AI which actually flanked you and threw grenades to get you out of cover, it had great puzzles and amazing set pieces.
All of which were pretty revolutionary for the time.

Halo is also awesome, bringing in a new way of thinking for the genre, Fallout 3 isn't a first person shooter in the traditional sense more of a RPG with FPS combat still an amazing game, borderlands meh nice idea boring execution, Deus Ex, must be played, max payne also awesome, though I picked up max payne 2 and wasn't impressed at all.

oh darn it was just about buy max payne didnt have time before
but i missed the deal
