HI there

Anybody got recommendations on any of these? I'm after a Divan for my first house but no idea looking at these what the difference is apart from firmness and price!

cheers

Yeah, my recommendation is this (from bitter experience!): steer well clear of Silentnight mattresses.

Why, had ours for over 10 years now and its been very comfy and well sprung, Only recently has it started to feel any signs of age (think thats only because the pillow top is getting on a bit)? It wasn't a cheap one though (its about 12" thick lol), did you go for a bargain one? not doubting you, just interested as I'd happily have another one.

After pocket sprung, you wouldn't go back to coil sprung beds like this! Even MORE so with Double and King sized as it makes less difference when only one sleeping in the bed!
(Memory foam etc. is a different argument, and even then, pocket spring AND memory foam is an option to look at!)

Cheap and would do for a lightly used spare bedroom, but I wouldn't want to spend the next few years lying on one!

Thanks for the tips - looks like you know your beds :-D. I've pulled together a few beds to compare from the site - a "Passion Memory" King is £450 with 2 drawers looks a good deal.

Also with 2 drawers there is a Thyme 2100 for £517, and Azure Memory £592 or Coast Airflow £555.

Decisions Decisions - I haven't got a clue!

If you want more info, there is a LONG thread on the Money Saving Expert forum site on beds which might help.... or complicate things!

Firmness is somthign you need to decide on... I have a medium firmness 1400 pocket spring bed now, which has lasted well, but is now a little too soft (well over 4 years which for me is a GOOD life!) - they start off firmer, but soften, although I only once made the mistake of an EXTRA firm bed - it was downright HARD! This time, I will be looking at a slightly firmer than medium model, knowing it is goign to be a little firm at first, but will soon slacken off.
Do a bit of trekking round showrooms first - you can get an idea of the types of beds you like, and of course you then look for them at a LOW price elsewhere! Don't be shy of trying them.

Beds and mattresses are a bit personal - for example I would LOVE a memory foam mattress for the support, but having tried one (spare bed!) with my dodgy back I have found them hard to turn over in (a bit like quicksand!), so haven't gone down that route - but either way of looking at it, coil springs are at the cheap end of the mattress range, with pocket spring and foams at the upper end, although a there is a lot of options in-between cheap and exorbitant!
I am thinking about a new mattress in the next few months, and one thing that is VERY common now is the "no-turn" mattress - I have no personal experience of these, and am VERY nervous about getting this type, as regular mattress turning has served me well - I am very heavy, and being disabled with back and hip problems, it means I am an extremely dreadful sleeper who turns over MANY MANY times every night, that ahmmeers the bed (and ME!) so I wonder if one would form a pit too quickly! (Already the reason I buy so many mattresses, I wear them out faster than most!)

Having had creaky, weak divan bases in the past (even with expensive brands!) which are often made of no more than 35x25mm timber construction and hardboard which you only see when you scrap it, I now have a bed frame which has lasted years, with several mattresses, so that's a choice to think about too - a little dearer to buy a reasonable frame, but having the potential for long life, lots of storage space under, but no drawer option - potentially a problem if it will be very visible in your bedroom!

double £157 DELIVERED:thumbsup:

Will do nicely for spare room

Ok for spares, but their marketing of "pocket" beds is a bit poor as the Miracoil system also has the connected springs. They're not true pockets.
I've been doing research and found these guys to be excellent on price - www.mynextmattress.co.uk/

That's all Silentnight are... marketing :-(

As you say fine for spare beds, if you can get one cheap.

A little known company that I found is Ergoflex, I bought a king size 2 years ago and it's fantastic!

Regarding the previous review that turing over is like quick sand...whatever!

We've had a Millbrook pocket sprung for about 15 years now and it's still really good.

I would hope they are fantastic, for memory foam, not what you would call cheap :whistling:

Memory foam is excellent. I have one myself, in the spare room, everyone who has used it, including me it likes it for support - just very difficult to turn over in - as it does mould to your shape, perhaps that is hardly a surprise.

Don't take my word for any of it... while they still exist, go to any (or many) bed shops selling all types of bed, and compare ALL types. (God knows how they still do exist as they are invariably much more expensive than online purchasing so make the most of it!) It's free, and far better to base comfort on than reviews from ANYONE who can only refer to one of their own once in donkeys-years purchase! Make sure you lie and sprawl out on the beds though - if you get funny looks, then live with it!

That's the comfort aspect taken care of, now how long it will last is another thing... entirely.

In 15 years time they may well still look OK, but if anything remotely like some of the sunken pits I have slept in in many other people's houses (and hotels!) over years, then meanness definitely rules over personal comfort. Torture is the kindest thing I can say about some. Even cave men would change the straw occasionally! :-(

If I spend say 400 quid on a mattress that gives me reasonable comfort for say 5 years, that's about 1.50 a week for two people: 75p a head!
Pretty cheap by anyone's standards - I wish I could get away with spending so little in the other 16 hours of each day!

It's a while since I saw it, so did a search on http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/ but seem not to be finding it, although a new thread called "Which mattress 2" make me think the original might have gone!

One poster, "Tim Deegan" features a lot on bed posts there though and clearly has a lot of information which I can still find usefull: although I think he has been somewhat "persecuted" on this site, so not seen him post here recently.
