It obviously depends on your car, but just to point out that Kwik-Fit offer MOT + Full Service from £165, depending upon engine size and oil used, as their standard price, so might be worth shopping around (I am sure others are cheaper than Kwik Fit as well). Technically a saving, but not if the start price is higher to begin with.

Very true, I do all my own servicing so would only use this for the MOT

these guys are rip off, took our mini in cpl years ago, needed new discs and pads all round and front shocks leaking oil. took it to local MOT only company and passed

and now 2 mot's later discs still ok and no sign leaks from shocks

It depends how you look at it. It's £13.50 of Tesco Vouchers for an MOT - which makes the MOT £54. An MOT around me is £30 so you are only saving just over 50% by using Tesco vouchers. Compared to say joining the Ramblers Association which is a genuine 75% saving over the normal price when you use Tesco vouchers.

When I checked with my Nationwide branch if you needed any work doing to get it through its test you had to have the work done with them to get a free retest otherwise you had to pay again for another test. This seemed very dodgy practice as you are their mercy. You are safer going with somone you know if not dodgy or going with a test centre that doesn't do repairs so you know there is incentive for them to fail your car.

Totally agree with your post.

Eastbourne branch are the worst I have been to. Charging for work that didn't need to be done and intimidating you if you question it.

Nooooo don't do it! They will find a million and one problems that don't exsist!! Spend the extra £20 to take it to a decent garage.

I took the gamble in feb and did this deal on the MOT
Took my 4 year old Elise there. The guy was very careful with mounting points. Checked with me on certain things.
It failed on headlight adjustment. He then let me adjust it and let me borrow his tools. I fiddled around with the light and then we put it back on the ramps and was ok.
No problems but I too wasn't too sure about their policy (have to get work done there).

yes you will get £27.42 off and of course you will pay £274.2

Avoid nationwide, kwik-fit and Fast fit and find the local one in your local newspaper they will offer free MOT with full service from £49.99 onwards

This company although owned by AA is Total Rip Off. Keep away from from these guys. Got to your local Mot or Garage or find from friends which guys are OK!!
Will never use Nationwide or Arnold Clark or Kwik Fit---all cut from the same cloth.

got more tesco vouchers than I can spend so it a great deal for me. Joining the ramblers is a big no no lol

and all MOT stations recharge you if you get work done elsewhere

Just had my service done with a Nationwide Autocentre (Altrincham). They found supposed faults that didn't exist when my car passed its MOT a week before with the Salford Council MOT centre (which doesn't do repairs).

These fails included bulbs that supposedly weren't working. Refused to let them do the work, got the car home and the lights in question were working fine. They also caused a fault by damaging a tyre valve and cap which was just fine when I washed the car two days before. Got the valve replaced at an indie tyre place.

They even suggest things need replacing (antifreeze, etc) just based on the car's age/mileage without actually checking when they were last done by looking in the service history!

You have to be nuts to use places like this. You may get the MOT for 1/2 price but then whack on the silly repairs and its much more expensive.

Find a good local independent garage instead: http://www.goodgaragescheme.co.uk/

i got done over by the one in York last year, spent over £400 on work most of which my father in law felt was highly suspect - won't be using them again

Nationwide replaced my wifes back discs and pads a few months back, last week it failed its MOT on the Parking Brake which turned out to be because Nationwide fitted the pads the wrong way round....even when theres a dimple which goes into a hole to show you which way !!!
Won't be using them ever again.

Agree with all above.
Complete cowboy outfit.

Avoid!

Some very good advice on here.... I use my local garage for my MOTs and repairs.

Used these a few years ago with a similar half price MOT offer, they failed it on something trivial. Replaced the part (forgot what it was now), and passed, with half the standard fee charged for the retest, making the offer pointless.

Went back a year later armed with another half price MOT and Tesco vouchers so it wouldn't cost anything, they failed it on a brake imbalance. Took it home, did absolutely nothing to the car and took it back for the retest and they said it was fine! Either I have a magically self-repairing car, or they're having a laugh.

Shouldn't challenged them really but I didn't want to waste any more of my time, just wanted my MOT certificate. Haven't gone back and won't in future, sounds like I'm not the only one they've messed about.

It seems to be the general view that people are not entirely overjoyed with the service they receive... However I for one have been a happy customer. I have used them for the past few years with both our cars - ONLY to get an MOT mind - and in all cases they have been fair. I have always managed to get a half price offer so never paid full wack - and they will re-test for free within 10 days if it fails, which gives me a little time to sort any problems.

The only niggle I had is the last time I used them for my wifes corsa, I dropped of the car and popped over the road for a breakfast at sainsburys and when I got back they said it failed on headlight alignement but they had done it for £13+vat. I had changed both rear shocks so this could easily have altered the ride hight. My only problem was they did not call me before doing the work - usually I would aguee this but was in a good mood - still cost me less than a ful MOT cost. The branch is Rayleigh, essex.

The reason why they are reasonable could be down to the fact they are always busy - so dont need to make any more work for themselves.

You must have found a nice branch - mine charges half the full MOT price for a retest within 10 days. :-(

It all depends on the branch obviously! My local branch are great. Done two MOTs with them. Very happy.

That is shocking. No garage should ever do possible work without asking and obtaining the owner's permission to go ahead.

I didn't know that the Ramblers Association did MOT's
