any of you are looking into buying a sat nav, or a bike, halfords have some great half price offers on. If you look online first, you tend to get a better price, which even if you reserve and collect instore, they will keep the price you reserved at, plus for this weekend they are giveing an extra 10% off everything, so my sat nav was originally £260, instore was halfprice at £130, online price was £111, with 10% off I paid £99 for it, told everyone in the store who were waiting to buy them to go home and reserve them 1st!

Did you read this review at Amazon before you bought it?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-NV-U53G-Navigation-Ireland-Northern/dp/B000VXXX5K/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=gateway&qid=1201433665&sr=8-1

The Bad Things:

The unit does not respond to screen input consistently. You need to touch the same area of the screen several times before the unit actually does anything. This doesn't appear to be a fault because the unit actually beeps to let you know your touch has registered. It just seems the unit is off doing something else more important. Sometimes this is fine and each touch will work, other times you will need to hit the screen two or even three times to get it to register. This wouldn't drive me quite so nuts if it wasn't a Sony - these people must spend millions on product development. If it wasn't for this flaw I would recommend it without hesitation. I would suggest you get down to a local shop and try the unit out. You may be happy to live with this - but give it a try first.

The Sony Web site is not setup to support the NV-U53G. I've tried to download the Speed Camera Updates, but in order to do this you need to go through a registration process (no big shakes) but you also need to enter a product number. The web site gives you instruction on how to find this but the instructions are for another Sat Nav unit and the menu you need to go through is simply not present on the NV-U53G unit. I'm sure this gripe can easily be sorted.

As a result of this I can't comment on the software supplied with the unit, I haven't used it.

Manual supplied with the unit is poor. It's the size of a small novel but only because it covers every language on earth. The actual content in English is minimal and doesn't go into any detail.

No case supplied with the unit - you are going to want to protect the screen so this is another £20 you will need to spend.

Summary

All things considered I do still think this is a great unit, the screen input issue isn't a problem once you're on the move which is where this unit really does shine with the wide screen and perfectly drawn maps.

This would have made 5 stars if it wasn't for the flaw with the screen input.

Has anyone notices the 10% off also works for gift vouchers??

So reserve and collect £100 worth of gift vouchers, pay only £90, then buy a £149 satnav unit with them at £99 (AND get Quidco). Unbelievable!!

So it's not perfect but for £99 (£95 with quidco) it's a nice bit of kit, plus if you get one with the time fault (the unit displays the incorrect time) sony will replace it with the NV-73T for free :)

Indeed it does say that but they still work as others have already found and posted on other threads ;)

Nice.
Just reserved my bike for collection instore.
Anyone know if you still get the 4% Quidco on reserve & collect?
#12
I dont think so, otherwise you could reserve and collect loads of items and simply not go to collect and pay for them but rack up the quidco
#13
Quidco is retrospectively paid so I would have thought you wouldn't be able to rack up quidco on the basis of don't pay, you don't get paid???

Why not just use the voucher for it where it's the same price. That was you at least avoid delivery costs.

Thanks for the SatNav post.
I got it from Sutton today but realised after that I could have done with more 3 features:
i. Speech Recognition for address input
ii. Bluetooth Calling
iii. Free Traffic Updates
So I'm taking it back and going for TomTom Go 520 Traffic
Still Hot though

Hi I am puzzled as to how you can buy a £99 item for £90 worth of gift vouchers?

10% off works on gift vouchers as well

But why bother with the gift vouchers if you get 10% off anyway? :-)

You get 10% off the gift vouchers, then reserve something else to collect & you get the discount again?
