joesmum - I hope you have complained to Halifax that they should show that message before you fill in the forms, not after, wasting people's time. Bad PR.
"We are currently experiencing technical problems".

Damn, filled out all the forms and got that message!! just hope I don't get loads of bloomin Halifax spam emails now :|
elindio - as the offer of a further 10% discount was advertised on Quidco, I do not think it would adversely affect the Quidco cashback, but its always worth checking. Any discount not obtained via Quidco can result in disqualification. They can take up to 4/5 days to reply to a query. I had to phone Halifax Bank to get the 10% because their website was playing up trying to do it via Quidco. The 10% was taken off the insurance premium.

On the £10 discount, I suggest you take that up with Quidco too, as I had to do. The £10 had not registered but Quidco corrected it for me. It seems that if you do not click the link in the e-mail offering the £10, which I did not do, the £10 bonus does not register so you have to raise a query to get it.

So far, the £50 cashback has been confirmed, the £10 has been confirmed but not yet shown on my account, and I have the 10% discount. Halifax Insurance will pay the £50 within 90 days of the transaction I believe, either by crediting the insurance account or your bank account. In case anyone does not know, you can also pay the insurance premium monthly free of charge.
@rayb - i had also noticed the 10% extra off for halifax customers buying online through their account, but to get that, i had to click through to open a new window and i wasn't sure if the quidco cookie would track that too - and i was worried that in trying to get this 10%, i would lose the £50 cashback from quidco?!

i queried this with quidco, but haven't received a response - so wonder if you can confirm that it definately works (i.e. can get £50+50 cashback, plus 10% reduction)? i didnt know about the additional £10 from quidco - will check that too!

I work in insurance and PLEASE DO NOT TAKE £50K CONTENTS UNLESS YPU HAVE LESS THAN 5 ROOMS IN THE HOUSE (including hallways).
Otherwise you WILL be under-insured. If you have to make a claim due to fire/smoke damage, any insurer will not pay out fully. They will simply refer to the averaging principle and say as you were under-insured by x% we will reduce your claim by this % as well.
That is a very sweeping generalisation. I know for a fact that when my daughters house was flooded due to a burst pipe in an upper flat, she received full payment, and she had only 8K cover, as arranged via the housing association, and included in her monthly rental payment.
I live in a large house, and never have taken more that 35K in cover, and this is way more than it would cost to replace my contents.
I was under insured too and my house got flooded.
I got confused with £50,000 and £500,000. I got the figure wrong with out looking at my renewal as I was a first time buyer back then.
anyway the building damage was £20k and the only paid Me £1,750! !!!!
was well upset at a error.
Now I can't get insurance cheap .
Sorry about that. Looks like you underestimated the 'buildings' side rather than 'contents'. Your figures do seem a bit strange though. They reckoned that your house would cost 500K to rebuild, must live somewhere fancy, or in a very large house. First time buyer too.
