If you know about these things you will realise that this is a phenomenal price, I was looking at these about a year ago and the price was wayover £100 delivered.

This allows you to connect up your ipod to your car stereo - be it an OEM or after market stereo, anyway heres the bumf.....

Harman Kardon Drive + Play puts the familiar iPod menu on a backlit display right on your cars dashboard, where you can read it at a glance. The system is controlled by an intuitive interface that mimics the navigation on your iPod, and is just as easy to use - browse by artist, album, song, genre or composer. Harman Kardon ount it someplace convenient and you can scroll through playlists or switch tracks at your leisure, all while keeping your eyes on the road.

Harman Kardon + Play has Simple controls: The control knob is virtually identical to iPods Click Wheel so it is immediately familiar to iPod users. With three mounting bases for the most comfortable placement, the Drive+Play will be your right-hand man.

Nerve center: The brain is the hidden central hub of the Harman Kardon Drive & Play. You can connect your iPod and place them both out of sight under a seat, in the glovebox or in the centre console, with no messy wires and no chance for damage to your iPod. It even charges your iPod when its plugged in Harman Kardon + Play.

Multiple mounting options: You can connect Harman Kardon Drive + Play in one of two ways. Use a 3.5mm audio line output or the wired FM transmitter with five preset frequencies harman kardon.

Auxiliary in: The unit has a second auxiliary input to provide access to other audio devices like navigation or mobile phone without unplugging your iPod.

Compatibility: The Harman Kardon + Play works with 3rd, 4th, 5th generation iPods, iPod mini and iPod nano with the Harman kardon

If you are lucky enough to have an Argos "Clearance Bargains" store near you, then you can pick these up for £14.99.

If not, then this price (£33.28) is still an amazing price.

This is cool, I mean hot!!! a mate of mine paid several hundred to have 'exactly' the same kit fitted by his BMW dealer. Must try and get one to annoy him. Heat added.

How can you find where a "clearance store" is? Just looked on Argos's website but its not listed there

Been thinking of getting one of these and at that price i will be getting one now :)
#5
I don't have a car, but I told my work colleague and he's ordered one.
I assume he says thankyou :)

Good find
#7
Would this work with an iPhone?
#8
Now that's a bargain !
#9
This will work with anything that has an iPod dock connector.

You can also plug in anything else with a 3.5mm jack but you will not have navigation controls.

I have one of these and I have been using it for over a year now. I couldn't live without it. The controls mimic the ipod wheel, but instead of touch controls its a 'turnable' wheel either way to select up and down the menus.

Word to the wise, the included 'wired' FM transmitter is garbage. Songs sound washed out and flat.

So connect with the supplied phono's if your car stereo has the inputs.

I paid £60 for mine a year ago. Bargain, voted hot.

Not sure if it will work with the iPhone. If it has the same connector then yes it should.

Thanks for this find. What a good deal!!!

They have 3 stores - Corby, Stanley(Durham) and Walsall. However, they also have an eBay store.
#12
yeah it works with iphone
#13
I'm sure I saw these for £29 in the Harmon/Kardon shop in Croydon last week. I couldn't work out what it was, so just walked on by...
#14
I could not see it on the ebay store.

Are you sure this works with the iphone, because i was under the impression the new generation of ipods have a chip in them that only recognize apple approved products.
i.e. The Apple phone has 1 chip and the other product has another for them to connect.
This is the only reason ive been holding off buying another ipod.
I have been using this in my car for the last 2 years and i have to say it is excellent. much better than any other as the screen mimics the ipod display making it much easier to navigate than some others that just display one album or song at a time through the radio display.
I also agree with the statement above with regards to the fm transmitter its pants!! much better using the rca outputs.
been looking to buy the mark II of this as it comes with a massive colour screen which can display your album art etc.. but its only available in the states!!
but im a sucker for gadgets so gotta have one!!! :-D

I hadn't heard of a chip in new ipods before i own a video ipod, ipod touch and a iphone lol anyway i have a logic3 speaker docking station and when i use my iphone it comes up with a message about it not being designed to work with iphone and wont work apart from charging :? obviously that must be reason why Apple must not be happy trying force people to go on 18month contracts and pay for there handset too if they want a iphone ....now there making you buy there specific add ons too aswell :whistling:
#20
i remeber reading something when the new ipods came out, about the new chips. as i said that was why i hadnt bought a new one yet.
Is there anyone who has this units who uses a new generation of ipod on it?? such as the ipod touch or ipod classic??
#22
Hi there,

When I was looking at these before I ended up buying a Dension Kit instead as it was a good deal cheaper, however they are car specific. My Dension car kit will work the iphone - although not designed to do so and it tells you that on the phone, not sure if you can navigate with it though and I think that would be the risk here though. Would be tempted to try though at this price - seriously thinking about replacing my dension with it.

Ali.

Incidentally I personally would rather pay a couple of quid more to get from an established retailer than from ebay. I have used bigpockets for years and although the recent PVR debacle raised some eyebrows, their CS is still very good.

If your megane has "update list" printed on the front PM me and I will give you some info on how to fit a 3.5mm jack to it!

How easy are these to fit?

I think you misunderstood the message. Non-approved accessories connected to an iPhone will make the message appear, which will prompt you to enable airplane mode, which disables phone features and WiFi to eliminate interference with untested devices.

I've used my iPhone with a Drive+Play system (and a Logic3 dock, as it happens), and it worked fine.

The 6th gen classic, 3rd gen iPod, iPod touch and iPhone have numerous 'issues' which previous generation devices, notably OEM and aftermarket car systems with iPod interfaces from BMW, Mercedes, Renault, Denison etc. The later firmware updates improved it but it's still not perfect on many devices, although in the case of BMW, they released an update to solve the problem before Apple helped a little.

so how does one get this fitted?

some youtube videos videos here.

I have one of these units in my car and can highly reccomend them

I bought one at a similar price a couple of months back, although I'm aware they used to be very expensive.

Unfortuatly I'm using it on an older ipod (ipod mini) so I'm unable to clarify if it works with the newer ipods as mentioned here.

A couple of words of warning though, you do need to remove your head unit and gain access to the back in order to fit the cable into the aerial socket (rather than the cheap FM transmitters you see on ebay etc this kit plugs striaght into the aerial socket to reduce any chance of interferance, the downside is you need to get to that aerial port of course). There is also a lot of wiring so it can be difficult to hide it (i.e. a wire from the car stereo to the control box, a wire from the display in this kit to the control box and another wire from the control dial to the control box. And of course another wire going to your ipod. So you have to be good at hiding cables in your car so it doesn't look a mess. Also the control box isn't as small as it could be, its very light in weight so you could stick it to the underside of your dash area in most cars.

Overall a very good piece of kit, the control dial is very similar to the click wheel interface on the ipod so its easy to use and understand. The display, although black and white unlike most fancy ipods these days is functional and readable (though I only change tracks at lights or when stopped just in case!), there are various mounts supplied for both the control dial and display and plenty of cable length.

Does anyone know if this will work on a 3rd Generation video nano 8gb?

Also, does this item charge the ipod whilst its plugged in and playing?
#32
I bought one of these kits about a year ago and fitted it to my wife's megane 2006 (the one with update list on the front of the radio) sounds fantastic and works perfectly with her 30gb ipod video 5th gen. I then got another for my car, a 2005 astra. As my radio has no aux in I needed to use the fm transmitter, which as other have posted is a bit of a let down. Also I am using it with a 6th gen ipod classic 80gb, which used to work fine when on the original firmware (possibly .1) but when it updated to the later (.2) firmware to try to sort the picture viewing problems when viewing pictures directly on the ipod screen it seems to have partially confused the ipod/Harman interface.

It will work in the end, but each time you turn the harman on it refuses to accept that there is an ipod connected for say a minute or so, in which time the ipod is rebooting itself (when the apple appears against a black screen). Once it has sorted itself out it will then work, but when you next get back in your car it will have to reboot again (and also will have forgotten what album or book you were listening to and will reset back to the start of your song list).

It may be that I can update the firmware again to get it running a bit more smoothly, so I may try that today and post back on here if anybody is interested.

Oh and yes it does charge the ipod BTW
#34
Ok, a few more answers.

I used to use mine with a gen 1 nano 2GB, works fine. I now use an 80gb classic (new type). Works fine. And yes it does charge the ipod.

To fit you will have to be good at hiding wires. I put the screen in the middle of the dash above the air vents. I popped out the middle air vents and made a channel big enough for a wire cut into the inside lining of the heating vent space so that when I popped the vents back in, it did not foul the wire, I then took out the radio and made a tiny hole in the heating/cooling duct behind the radio which is where I hid and fed the wire through. Very neat and tidy.

The wheel control I fitted next to my gear stick, I removed the plastic section where the gear stick was and ran the wire underneath it, just leaving enough of a gap when fitting back on not to pinch the wire.

Fot the 'brain' of the system I fixed it inside and far up the passenger footwell as not to be seen, added bonus here is you can tuck wires under the carpet at the top, I then drilled a small hole in the back of my glove-box and put the ipod connector in the glove box, so I can leave the ipod in there, whilst controlling it from just beside the gear knob.

For power you can either use the supplied 12V plug, or hard wire it to your system. I opted for the hard wire as the 12V socket was already being used.

Red goes to constant '+' (to charge ipod while car is off) Yellow goes to switched '+' (I used the same switched supply as the radio, that way when I switch the radio on, the drive+play comes on), black to negative '-'

A friend also bought one and he fitted his control wheel on a blanking plate which would have been a switch.

It takes alot of jiggery pokery, but its fun and rewarding when its done right, on my system you can't see any wires save for about 0.5cm of it before it disappears into the plastics.

It sounds like alot of work, but don't let that put you off, you never know, you might learn something in the process too!

erk, did you find it easy fitting to the Megane? Your post suggested that the stereo has an aux in, is this at the back of the stereo or is it because you have a better/newer model than me and there's on the front?
#37
They have them in stock. I've just ordered one. Prob not worth unexpiring though 'cause there's only a few left.
#38
Probably sold out because it was in the email they sent out today !!
#39
Many thanks OP.

Just ordered one now for my wifes car, I have one fitted to my Citroen. Took about an hour to fit and all the wiring is tucked away. The only problem is when on long journeys you have to keep changing the transmit frequency so as to avoid clasing with Radio 2 which also transmits around 88 -90 Mhz. Selecting a custom frequency of 107.9Mhz seems to produce less interference.

On Citroens there is no line-in socket so you have to use the radio transmitter.
