This is a non-UK model apparently so those coloured buttons on the top cannot be mapped to the functions of the coloured buttons on (for example) a Sky remote.
You could assign the functions to other buttons on the harmony though.

At this price I don't think you can go wrong
#4
I can't find this model on the Logitech website?
#5
Its an old model thats all.

you can program the soft keys to show the coloured buttons.
#6
does anyone know if this works with media centre extenders? like the xbox 360? ;-)
#7
Voted Hot! Ordered one as this is a very good price even for a discontinued item! I'm guessing it will work fine with media center extender as long as you have the required MCE IR Unit that is usb or using the IR pickup at the front of the X360!

The real test for this is if it will control our new IR controlled Fire! :-)

If its Infrar Red, has a remote controll, then you will be able to control it. Theres only a few exceptions to that. It works with the XBox 360, but the 360 has a weak IR sensor so its not flawless and sometimes it wont switch on or off. But a thought out set of programmed soft keys with On/Off on there and you can just hit that when it doesn't turn on and way you go.

This is a pretty good deal. But it was released in April 2004. So at over three years old you're certainly not getting anything cutting edge. There is a review of it here which is very good. It retailed for over £150 here when it was new.

http://reviews.cnet.com/remote-controls/logitech-harmony-688-silver/4505-7900_7-30833953.html

Personally I would like RF technology rather than IR. That way it would help control my lights to. Plus I'm sure they'll be other things in the future in my house that I will want to control from other rooms. The other thing is that I think that the Harmony 525 that is a much newer model does exactly the same thing but with better buttons. You can get that for £40.

Any success with Vista with this remote? - can't find any verification that it will...
#12

On their support section, they do have a software download for vista, so i'd assume it's supported

Gutted, now out of stock, shame as it was a brilliant price.
#17
This is an old model and why you probably still see some outrageous prices on some sites. I paid £35 for mine about a year ago then sold it to buy the much, much better 885 for £90 from Pixmania.

Worth £25, though. Voted hot.

EDIT: Voted expired :P
#18
does it operate virgin media TV?
#19
I saw the 'Vista' in download, so went for it. Although now expired, may have just got in - perhaps an 'out of stock' e-mail is waiting for me though.

I can't find a review that shows the box and packaging. I know this replaces existing remotes, but was wondering if it had a seperate USB IR receiver. That would be v handy, as I have a Vista PC now, and would like to use my old MCE remote IR unit, or I'll have to buy a generic USB IR reciever - does anyone know about such things?

Cheers.
#20
Does anyone know whether this will work with Freeview? Thanks.
#21
If it is IR and has a remote control then this remote

WILL OPERATE ANYTHING!!!!!

Sky, virgin, your tv, your remote fan, your IR light switches, your X10 devices etc etc etc.

There are very few instances that it wont work, as long as its not RF.

seriously! I've got a 525 and it controls everything I own, including a DAB that never came with a remote, and a no-name DVD player that google's barely heard of. For the dvd player, you just line up the two remotes and press a few buttons to let the Logitech "learn" how it works, and bam! it's fine.

I honestly can't say enough good things about these Logitech remotes. I've got so much kit that visitors would inevitably get the settings wrong on something. With these you just choose "watch freeview" or "listen to DAB" and it turns all the components to the correct settings.

Details here http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/remotes/universal_remotes/devices/372&cl=ca,en
for those lucky enough. Looks like a current model on the Logitech Canada site. Vista supported too.

Order acknowledged at 9.59am :)
#24
To get this to work with Vista, would you need something like this?

...also, my tracking still says 'awaiting processing' - did I miss out?

Think you missed the point of the question. I think he wanted to know whether device can be programmed on PC with Vista

Yes, there is a Vista version of the harmony software. Current version is 7.3.2 which is a lot easier to use that the software that comes with it.
#27
The software will pick up on the fact its not the latest version and will merrily go away and download the newest version which works with vista. Im currently using vista and my harmony remote works fine.
#28
Here's the software download page for the 688:-

As you can see it does have software for vista.

Yes it was - sorry.

Mine shipped today.

managed to get this early yesterday thanks to the op! I have the 885 which is amazing - controls everything downstairs! the 688 will be the bedroom remote and replace 3 controllers! so this is a great deal and Harmony remotes are the best by far!!! does anyone know of a good ir to rf convertor so i can control my remote control sockets from the harmony???
#31
I can't believe this.

Got a telephone call today to say that there was a manufacturers fault and that all the remotes had been recalled. Therefore they would not ship mine.

I ordered at 1.00am Monday so if you ordered after then, which was 8 hours before I posted, and get your remote please let me know.

Sounds like they have either cocked my order up or are trying to get out of honouring the deal.
#32
At least you got an explanation! GRRR Not ordering from this lot again! Very unsatisfactory! :-(
#33
They should either get replacement stock in or offer the 525 for the same price. It is £45 but and a newer model but its spec is lower than the 688.

edit
cheapest harmony remote i can find elsewhere is the 525 for £39.99 at ebuyer

So did you get a call aswell or an email? I take it you never got the shipped email?

They have said they shipped mine today.

Ordered 9:24am on Monday.
#35
i got the same calll and i ordered mine at approx 10:00am on Monday morn!!!!

they apologised and said that all the remotes had to be sent back to logitech said they wont get them nack for between 4-6 weeks!
#36
It looks as if some lucky people have been advised that theirs have been despatched.

Would be interested to hear if anyone does actually receive one though, now that Laskys are saying they have all been recalled!
#37
I have had a confirmation email to say that the remote has been sent and i should expect delivery in 2 days,no email recalling the remote at all,so i wonder if i will get it. I ordered it at 9.10 am.

Same email to me - ordered at 9.59 Monday. Strange, though, they left a message for me to telephone them. I did and they said that it was a mistake - everything was fine.
#39
I ordered 2 at around 9.30am Monday. Both have been dispatched.

I wonder what the 'fault' is.

If there is actually a fault, then I will expect an email about the recall. Perhaps a phone call to Harmony themselves might clarify this.
