Still voting the Dali Zensor hot, btw
Nothing will replace my Yamaha HS7s studio monitors i love them but they are for my production work, I havn't listened to the Samsons but they do look value for money they will sound flatter than hi fi speakers which may not be every ones cup of tea.
The Dali's are meant for general listening maybe as part of a surround sound system as they are very well balanced.

Speakers are a matter of taste of course, but to my mind any real hi-fi speaker should sound flat not peaky. Particularly in the mid range. High fidelity=accurate faithfulness (:-) ) However, although the 80as have very rigid reflex cabinets, they don't have a very extended bass, I mean below 50cps, maybe this is what you mean. Most people seem to like a really booming bass with their surround sound systems. Also the 80as are quite a bit bigger than the Dalis, probably too big for most peoples surround sound systems. However, they are internally bi-amped, so can be directly driven from phono outputs, which may be an advantage.
I don't use them as my primary monitors of course
Yes all that's well and fine but they are near field great maybe if you are sat right in front of them, they won't fill a room.
Good find! Dalis are rarely discounted and also retain their resale value compared to some other brands.

...shame I threw away all my chrome tapes
You can still buy them.

Not seen them lately. I don't need too much quality nowadays with it but if I come across a few cheap ones I would buy them.
Just rummaged through a pile of my old stuff and found the old man's Pioneer CT-W630R. That thing cost over 200 quid back in 1993. A quick google search shows someone sold one for a tenner on ebay a few months back!

The old fella thinks it'll be worth some money one day... I haven't got the heart to tell him! :)

If the op is still reading comments here - the 2nd hand option is deffo the way to go. :)

If you have tapes as masters or originals, you may just want a way to do stuff with them including making backup copies to use. Eg you may be a collector of 8 bit software
