Review:

Innocence Has A Power Evil Cannot Imagine...

Pan's Labyrinth is the story of a young girl that travels with her mother and adoptive father to a rural area up North in Spain, 1944 - after Franco's victory. The girl lives in an imaginary world of her own creation and faces the real world with much chagrin. Post-war Fascist repression is at its height in rural Spain and the girl must come to terms with that through a fable of her own.

Great film, though I'm utterly confused as to which is the best version of the HD-DVD.
Does the UK version have the noise reduction that many have complained about?

The UK version has 5.1 sound, whereas the US version has 7.1 sound. Thats the only difference as far as I'm aware.

Voted Cold. No such thing has a "hot Deal" when it's HD DVD. It's a bad investment for a dead format.
#6
Go for the UK version, the picture quality is far superior to the USA edition. I personally would vote picture quality over 7.1 sound anyway, besides it's a foreign language film, I think 5.1 suffices.

The US version is plagued with acute digital noise reduction, so much so that all the detail is removed from the movie and the actors look plastic, the UK version has no DNR whatsoever.

If you know that you're buying into a dead format, I don't see what the problem is. This HD DVD is considerably cheaper than anywhere else, which makes it a hot deal. Just because the format is dying out doesn't mean the deal is cold. The disc will work until the player breaks essentially, so it can be viewed as a good investment.

It's not a bad investment, it's for people who have an HD-DVD player!

I have a Blu Ray player aswell as an HD DVD player and I actually prefer my HD DVD collection, who cares if the format died, I am amassing a huge collection of HD films for a bargain, usually 3 for the price of 1 BLU.

HD DVD lives!

What is it about technology that makes some people feel the need to climb on to a hobby horse armed with a superiority complex and an insatiable desire to berate anyone who has a different opinion... bluray vs HD... PS3 vs 360... Mac vs PC... who cares? If you want to spout about your technological preferences then take to a forum that actually cares about what you have to say. 95% of the people on this forumdo not.

...and relax.

Pan's Labyrinth - great film btw... voted hot!

You're encouraged on this site to explain in the comments why you vote something cold. I voted cold and explained why so, as you say, i'm welcome to my opinion and i expressed it. Do you not understand the function of a forum? If i didn't comment on why i voted cold it would defeat the point in participating in this forum.

Warning: HD DVD fanboy alert! :viking:

(Plus, the HD DVD player itself was a bad investment).

Brilliant film, some may not get it though . . .

Anyone know of any good deals for the vastly superior UK version?
#19
This is the UK version.

What do you mean UK version? I thought only this subtitled Spanish version existed.

Great film and i usually hate dubbed or subtitled films.

I think it was aimed at you son...
Reasons for voting cold are great as long as they aren't "because I don't like it". So if they were free, would that be a cold deal?
No, I don't own a player - stop generalising.

Your reason for voting cold defeats the point of participating in this forum. The point of the voting hot or cold is to determine if each individual deal is worthwhile or not. In this instance the question is "is £8.99 the best price for an HD DVD copy of Pan's Labyrinth?" - nothing at all to do the pros and cons of buying into HD DVD as a format. Everyone knows that HD DVD is, for want of a better phrase, "a dead format"... but some people have bought HD players and those people will want to have something to play on it... simple as that... no need to crow over HD's demise.

I believe the next move is to call me a fanboy... over to you! :)

You are probably better off checking your comments before you say other people seem like teens.
Who says an HD-DVD player is a bad investment - what business is it of yours? Anyway, move on and rubbish something else that somebody else has bought.
Good deal - not my cup of tea but a good deal.
#25
This really appeals to me, thanks.

I have just made a 'bad investment' and bought a nice cheap XBOX 360 HD DVD drive.

My reason was mainly so I could record HD footage of my home videos from my HD camera to a standard DVD, and play it at high definition through the HD player so my family could watch it on the HD telly. Its a pretty cheap option to do this while I wait for the price of blu-ray recorders to come down :whistling:

So, if I can pick up some cheap HD DVD movies as well, its all good. I don't see it as 'investing' in the wrong product - its will serve my needs well, as it will for many others, and I don't think anyone is daft enough to think Toshiba and the major film studios will change their minds regarding this format.

If I need a blu-ray player in the future, the fact that I've spent £30-odd quid on an HD DVD player will not stop me getting one (fancy a PS3 actually )

Voted hot.

It's 'saw' your comment...not 'seen' your comment...now go and do your homework..

..and when we talk about the UK version..we mean as opposed to the inferior US version..which you'd know if you actually read the posts..

Wow you can hold a grudge, you're like a dog with a bone. You disagree with me, get over it. Now run along with your other teen friends and go see Hannah Montana or a Busted tribute band or something.

P.S. who is Hannah Montana? One of your "special" Blu Ray films?

Well maybe you are a fanboy, maybe you aren't. I wouldn't dare make a judgement now. As soon as an opinion is made on this site, 20 people start having a go at you so i think I'll just accept your post and give it a "no comment".

I don't have a Blu player but would I go onto threads about cheap films and vote it cold? No, because they are still hot deals, just not ones that interest me.

The purpose of voting hot or cold is whether an item is a bargain, i.e. its cheaper than the norm, NOT whether its something you happen to want or not. Its only cold if you find it cheaper elsewhere or its so completely useless theres no point.

The same film on Play is £17.99 for Blu-ray, so this is £9 cheaper for exactly the same video quality film WITH fully working interactive features and no region encoding so to put simply, its hot, plain and simple.

Now move along Blu boys and leave us HD-DVD fans to snap up our cheap films in peace.

I agree but it is my honest opinion that HD DVD is never a good deal. I'm not doing it to annoy anyone, it's just my opinion.

No, the annoying bit comes in when you try and patronise (look it up) people by saying they make bad choices (beneath you I suppose) or they are young etc.
This from someone who is 21? Grow up, get some perspective and come back in another decade or so.

1080P HD-DVD players selling at around the same price of DVD upscalers with a fairly large back catalogue of cheap HD films available aren't good deals?

I was recently in my local Tesco and was walking down an isle to purchase some deoderant. I walked past the tampons and a sign said "fantastic deal!" it was buy one, get one free.
So I called the manager and told him it was a rubbish deal as I have no use for tampons what so ever. He told me to get the **** out of his shop! Go figure!!!

Seriously, i'm not joking in the slightest. I can 100% garauntee you that i'm bored of you. I'm not even reading what you have to say any more. I just see that you have quoted me and know you must STILL be going on. Please stop talking to me. You seem to not be having a very good day today. Either that or you are always like this, i don't know. I have nothing against you and the only thing that is "beneath me" is this conversation with you that you seem adamant to drag me in to. As far as you know me, i'm just text on your screen. If you want an argument with someone so bad, go do it with someone face to face. Even talk to them about how much you hate me if you want, i really couldn't care less. Just know that if you keep talking to me, you're wasting your time typing because i promise i won't read it.

Tampons aren't a "dead format". Completely different context.
