this just dropped in to my mail box and thought some of you with crap terrestrial signal like me might find this useful:

Many us if we are looking to purchase a new television would certainly ensure it has the ability to view HD content, whether we have the facility to watch actual HD programming or not. This is because HD channels will become more prominent in the future. Well?whilst HD is limited at present it is out there, along with the many other hundreds of standard definition TV channels and radio. So whilst you have ensured your TV is HD Ready?make sure your'e ready for HD.

High-end, feature packed HD digital free satellite kit
USB recording function (PVR) - just plug your external hard drive to record digital satellite TV in Standard or High Defintion
No contract or monthly subscription required to receive Free satellite digital TV in high definition
HD upscaling for standard definition, improves picture quality through HDMI or component connections
Ideal for digital TV reception where Freeview signals are poor

Receiver with powerscan to simplify channel searching and powersearch to keep the channels up to date on standby

This new addition to the award winning ''Passion'' range has the ability to record satellite TV programmes via the USB socket on the receiver. How easy are these to actually set up? I'm guessing you have to install it all yourself then point it at the satellite? At only slightly more expensive than a freesat box, this is quite tempting... 250 free-to-air UK channels though? surely theres not that many?

That 250 probably includes all the different regional variations of BBC, ITV and C4. There are loads!

It does look like a good bit of kit for the price - but is it Freesat or is it an HD box for free channels being beamed off Astra2?

If it isn't freesat, does that you won't be able to get ITV HD, who have an exclusive supply to Freesat (ITV HD isn't even available on Sky HD).

There isn't huge amounts of HD on ITV but I'd rather get the Freesat box and get it, than this one and not?

from the description above:
"Preloaded with 250 channels for UK television from the Astra 28.2E satellite"

however it does also say:
"Pick up thousands of free digital TV stations from multiple satellites including HD broadcasts"

so it could manage to get some if not all the HD channels - ITV HD isnt on Sky because of similar reasons to wny you didnt used to be able to get all of virgin tv freeview on it, all to do with the pennies

as for installation, yep either self install or install from maplins at £80 (+ quidco) or a local fitter at about £50ish

cheers

Interesting, but my question wasn't why don't you get ITV HD on Sky, it was can you get ITV HD on this?
#6
its not a freesat box its free to air ie FTA think you can get now and next with freesat but not sure also there is new software you can down load to get freesat EPG but is a bit unstable and not freesat aproved also you cannot get ITV HD red button to work also probs with timer hard drive recordingsIf you can live with these shortcomings then its very cheap High def PVR also maybe better software out later. Looked into this sat box its been out for quite a while not sure whether to buy?

Taken from the Maplin website:-

Q) Is this Freesat compatible (The BBC + ITV one, not Sky)? - Adam

A) Yes can receive all channels available via Freesat.

ITV1 isn't ITV HD though...

You will not get ITV HD with this receiver.

So, as usual, Maplins answer was wrong.

You are wrong, you can get ITV HD wihn this receiver as I will know as I have own this receiver for 3 months now, it very easy to get ITV HD working, just download the most upto date software from the fortec star website onto a usb drive, then you just plug it into the usb port and then update and then you are away.

Some info for any of you who wish to buy this receiver

Fortec Star link for most upto date software

http://www.fortecstar.com/downloads/index.asp?products=114%2C1

ITV HD Setting for receiver,

frequencie 11426.00 H DVB-S (QPSK) - 27500 2/3

Hope it helps you

I have a Fortec Star Passion HD and have no problems with getting ITV HD. I also have a Sky HD+ Box but do not subscribe to the service and there are currently more HD channels on offer using my Passion HD Receiver. You may need to update the firmware to get ITV HD. I have had a few issues with my box re-booting and there has also been the occasional freeze which requires the box to be turned off but as it's now my secondary box, I don't find it too much of an issue.

Look guys, i have had freesat for a few months now. I'm too tight to fill skys' pockets. This is a freesat system not FTA otherwise why would you need a dish. I watched this weeks footie in high definition, simply press the red button. Not a lot of hd on freesat at the moment, but it will come. In terms of value for this deal, don't really reckon it. A dish on ebay with lnb £25.00, Goodmans HD box at £60.00. Have a read on how to set up dish and your there.

No EPG only manual recording via USB just now and next program imformation when on freesat channels itv red button does not work so bit limited. Unless you are needing FTA and usb recording may be better of with freesat box if thats all you req.But if you are ok upgrading software on this can be a really good multi satalite box(inc freesat) as it will controll motorised dish aswell

I like the idea of getting HD content.... although I would still prefer a satellite system, where you can could get "Free" Saturday (3pm) Football Matches and much more.....

Get a 90+cm dish with Motorised system, with Linux Box or Technomate and you could watch lots of footy and many other channels....

Tried getting itv hd using the vpid etc but got picture and no sound so do it as above.
