I bought on of ASDA's own brand "Onn" HDMI upscalers a while ago.

Firstly, the build quality is terrible. Secondly. the upscaling is garbage - its actually worse than the SD picture on my Pioneer DVD player. Thirdly, I exchanged it twice in 2 weeks cos it stopped working (same problem both times).

So if it's the ONN one, avoid like the plague. And by all accounts, the DUAL branded ones aren't much better.

I'm hardly suprised really and was wondering if a SCART RGB from a £30 DVD Player would give a better picture than this; provided your TV is up to snuff of course.

DVD technology is 10 years old now, Like with CD players there are plenty of budget DVD players out there even from major brands, now to the point that unless you really are after a dirt cheap player for a tv in the gym use etc it really isnt worth spending more than £20 on a supermarket brand player....much better opting and spending £40 on a Philips or something.

Yes it may be half that cost but when you consider the gap in prices narrowing now between quality players and supermarket players are tehy really such a "bargain" anymore, especially considering the dubious build qualities and picture quality of a lot of these players.

Absolutely - just because it has an HDMI outout does not mean its any good.

I use a Tosh EP30 or my PS3 for upscaling - both of which do it so much better than the ONN (which is now in the garage because it's so useless).

I must admit I am astonished at how good the EP30 is at upscaling and since buying it is the main player in the house, the only criticism being its damn slow booting up. The other upscaling player we have the Samsung HD950 only use now is for DIVX and SACD/DVD-A playback, if only the Toshiba did all of that too.
