HDMI to HDMI - 2m cable £1.99 ****Cheap cheap price*** instore only at Sainsburys and should be considered if you are buying the Philips HDMI DVD

There is another reason why I posted this, as I did buy the Philips DVD and there were no cables instore.

is anyone close to a sainsburys that does and are willing to post one to me?? (I'll pay of course)

Not want to sound tight but I bought the philips because of the cheap price and I don't really want to spend half the price of the player again (£25) to get a HDMI cable. I was shocked at the price of the cables in Currys!!

I might pootle along and buy this and the DVD player in half an hour or so - let me know if you still want one, but particlarly, let me know that you're sure the DVD player is just £49.99...

Yes please!!!

Ok - no promises, but I'll post later tonight and let you know if
1. I managed to get my son asleep and have time to go.
2. Could be bothered going
3. Could get the cables. :)

No problem ourdave - please don't make a special journey, I apreiciate the thought already!

Why are HDMI cables so cheap?

Why are HDMI cables so cheap?

Why are they so expensive? There's alot less in them that a scart connector, so they should be cheaper. They're not made from exotic materials or anything. They're expensive, because the market ain't saturated yet, so Comet, Dixons et al can charge what they want! Profiteering sons of...

Anyways, just for reference, Dundee branch has over 8 DVD players, but no HDMI cables. Won't be getting them until next week. Maybe. Perhaps save someone a journey...

I've got a new Tosh SD370E coming from play.com next week, and I don't think that it comes with a cable. So, if anyone here got a job-lot and wanted to make a couple of quid then count me in please!

Sorry 50p.
I did 1.
Even did 2.
But 3 wasn't possible - I went to a store in Shirley near Solihull - and they had no DVD players at all, no HDMI cables, and in fact, very very little electrical at all.

They did, however, have a Fellows Confetti-Cut Shredder half price at £20...so it wasn't a wasted trip.

Simply because they're cheap to make. Gigabit ethernet cables carry the same data load as 1080p over HDMI, and you can get 10 metres of that for £2:

Any HDMI cable costing more than a few quid is a ripoff.

Because HDMI cables are digital, they either work or dont work. I know that sounds silly, but with analogue (ie composite or scart) the quality of the lead is important as to what kind of picture you get. With digital (HDMI) dont get caught out and pay more that £10, because unless its very long you wont see any picture quality difference between a £50 cable and a £3 cable! With scarts, its worth paying a bit more, because you will see a quality difference between the cheap and the pricey.

Play.com have hdmi cable for £7.99 in case you can't get one from sainsburys. Still very cheap at that.

As Russ said above digital cables either work or they don't. There is no grey area. No fuzzy picture with a bad quality cable....It just won't work at all.

Not quite right...HDMI carries analogue sound, so it could easily get reduced Audio quality.

can anyone else confirm the quality issues with HDMI? - I had long suspected that digital cables (i.e. optical cables too) should be the same quality regardless and price - and the only thing that might deteriorate a signal is the length of the cable.

- seems logical to me but happy to be proved wrong! Let the debate continue!
#18
I would suggest you splash out the £2 and if it shows a horrible picture, junk it. I suspect it will be just fine

Fantastic price. Probably only in the larger stores only. Call them up on 0800 636 262(freephone) and they will tell you the nearest large store with an electrical section and if you ring the store up they'll put one aside at customer service desk till you come in :) .
#20
Dont see HDMI cables in the same way as scarts. Cheap scarts can be terrible, colours blurring into eachother, and flickering screens. The same can't be said for cheaper HDMI cables.
#21
Come in handy for the PS3!
#22
contrary to p-e-t-e comment above.

HDMI DOES NOT carry analogue signals - HDMI is a high bandwidth DIGITAL Audio/Video Cable.

A cheap cable is just as good as an expensive one. Many shops are using the fact the its a new type of cable to charge more as people don't understand what its about.

I agree. The Audio is also digital.

I picked up 4 today for 99p each from Sainsburys at Braehead Shopping Centre. That was all that was on that was on the rack but they may have more in the back. Brand is Vivanco, cable is 2m long. Has a data rate of 5Gbit/s and is shielded.

Was priced at £14.99 on the rack, but i asked the girl to scan it and it came up as 99p so i snapped them up :)

Have 2 which i will post for cost + p&p (Estimated £2.50-3ish total as i'll need to pick up some padded jiffy bags and send them 1st class). PM me if you want one, first come first served.

Edit : 2 isn't including the one which i have set aside for 50p since he specifically requested one and as he posted the deal it seems the decent thing to do.

All my spare ones are gone now. Good luck finding one guys :)
#32
I've picked up a spare one from the Oxford branch, if anyone needs one. There were a few left earlier.

Sherlock.

The quality of a HDMI cable will not vary a great deal. It provides 0 1 1 0 0 1 etc. there will be no problems unless you trip over it.!.

Thanks for the tip. bought one today 99p , with the dvd player excellent value thanks.

For anyone who has bought the dvd there is a firmware update available http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?slg=ENG&cat=DVD_HOME_THEATER_CA&sct=DVD_PLAYERS_SU&session=20070315150650_195.93.21.103&grp=HOME_ENTERTAINMENT_GR&ctn=DVP5960/05&mid=Link_Software&hlt=Link_Software.
