On the website of Hercules (http://www.hercules.com/us/webcam/bdd/p/19/hercules-blog-webcam/), it mentions video as 640 x 480, whereas the Cdiscount site mentions it as 800 x 600.

Can anyone who owns it, clarify??

I haven't got one so can't be sure but on that page you linked to, near the bottom under Technology it mentions "Interpolated mode"...
Interpolated mode
Mode allowing the user to attain, via software, larger image resolutions by creating new pixels, the characteristics of which are based on those of neighboring pixels.

Maybe that's how they get 800 x 600?
#12
This review says 800 x 600 video is possible, although 640 x 480 gives better frame rates.

I've ordered a pair, thanks.

Bought two of these a while ago the last time they were on offer - quick warning though... Although vista ready, there are no Vista x64 drivers available. So currently it does not work on Vista x64 (possible XP x64 as well).

Just giving the heads-up

What are you using the webcam for.. not " perviously" I hope.. lol

Anybody know if this'll work with Linux/Ubuntu?

I piut Ubuntu on the PC my kids use (so they can't accidentally downlaod any more visruses!), it'd be great if they could use this with Skype to chat with their cousins in the US.
#17
I bought 2 of these when they were £10 and they are utter crap - you get what you pay for.

It would be helpful if you would explain why!
#19
Terrible contrast (washed out picture) and picture breaks up.

Bought one when this was on offer a few weeks ago like the ap says doesn't work on 64 bit which is unbelievable in this day and age that a new product doesn't work on 64bit.
#21
dont suppose anyone got this working with windows 7 :S :(

Out of all the IT people I work with (and it's a lot), only 1 of them uses a 64bit MS OS (Vista). So not having 64bit drivers is hardly an issue for the masses.

As for the person saying they are crap, plenty of people have said otherwise, but then, maybe for the price they were expecting worse and were pleasently surprised, while you may have been expecting miracles  .

Does that mean it will not work on Vista Home Premium :)

It will work on vista home premium - yes, but from my experience - only the x86 (32-bit) version. Not the x64 as there are no drivers for x64 based O/S's on the Manufacturers website.

No. I thought that. Unfortunately the 'crap software' as you so state is embedded into the driver setup.exe on the CD or eownload from the site. It is required in order to funtion it seems. Uninstall the software and POOF! - the drivers go with it. Similarly, an install of the drivers setup.exe will auto-install the software without any otehr option. Sorry!

The cameras are ok for the money. They arrived this morning, and I managed to download and install the drivers without installing any of the crapware that came on the CD. Increase the sharpness, tweak the picture settings and for £4, theyre pretty good.

Good post OP

YEES !
just got them and they look pretty good!

I was distracted and didn't use the freedelivery code , but because I was a new user I got them delivered for 9.99 which it's still pretty good!!

thanks again for the hint. !!!
#29
just got mine.
it's "ok" for 4£ but the picture quality is "out of focus" and washed.
Still ok for a temp webcam or second computer , but could be disappointing

Expired now as free delivery code no longer works.
