Good price (probably best around now Buy-HP have ran out of stock @£207).

A great alternative to an N40L microserver if you need more power than the N40L can offer....on top of faster CPU this also has a proper ILO3 card and Dual port Gigabit NIC. Although specs say MAX 16Gb Ram with the correct memory it will run up to 32Gb Ram.

Cashback is likely to be extended to next month as well but maybe worth checking with Serversdirect as delivery will have to be before 31st August if not.

Very tempted by this, was torn between it and the n40l as power consumption is my main issue but would like the extra power!

EDIT: Page 33 of this pdf tells you the PSU specs, can't find an idle consumption though?

This review suggest idle usage of 35w and peak of 97w

Thats pretty good actually, I make that about 850Kwh a year at full load (300 idle)? Certainly under a tenner a month to leave on 24/7 anyway, my current server is an old desktop with a 500w PSU in it and I suspect eats at least double the juice of this one. Will pay for itself within a year.

    Different machine.

I'm not sure it is as such, this server comes with that xeon processor as an option. There are many configurations, but looking through that review it is the same server. Which means this one will actually consume less, as the CPU is rated at 15w lower.

Must admit i didn't spot the reviewed model was a different SKU. Looks like that reviewed model also came with the 460w Hot Plug PSU option as well. wouldn't expect it to be too much different to be honest and I've seen a few forum posts here and there that suggest the figures quoted in the review are similar for the G840 model.

I've put both the ML110 G840 and N40L into the HP Power Advisor app which has estimated 23.31w idle for the ML110 and 16.14 idle for the N40l..

The more I think about this the more I'm sure I should get one, its becoming a no brainer. The only reason to get the N40L would be to save space, but I have cat5 to the attic so I don't really care about its size. If power consumption is as low as stated then this looks ideal, especially now I've realised it has a nice drive tray thingy for the RAID drives so I don't have to pull it apart every time.

Just been paid too, but am skint from the summer. Do we know if the HP cashback is continued on this model too?

Can you use the optical SATA ports for use with hard-drives like the Microserver?

Doesn't seem to have an eSATA either so might have one less SATA port than the Microserver.
    tek-monkey
Yup, no eSATA I can see. Also not sure it has the internal USB port like the microserver? A SATA port can usually be used for anything can't it? I'd also assume that as it has 2 spaces for optical bays as well as 4 hard drives it must have 6 ports at least? Is the 250Gb it comes with in the front bays?
    rheumatoid
space is a slight consideration for me but then so is noise. anyone know how the noise levels of this compare to the N40?
    tek-monkey
Taken from page 37 of the pdf file I linked to earlier:

Acoustic Noise Listed are the declared A-Weighted sound power levels (LWAd) and declared
average bystander position A-Weighted sound pressure levels (LpAm) when
the product is operating in a 23°C ambient environment. Noise emissions
were measured in accordance with ISO 7779 (ECMA 74) and declared in
accordance with ISO 9296 (ECMA 109).
    Idle
    L WAd 4.4 Bels
    L pAm 27.1 dBA
    Operating
    L WAd 4.4 Bels
    L pAm 27.2 dBA
NOTE: The listed sound levels above apply to standard SATA configurations.
Additional options may result in increased sound levels.

Can you give us a reference for the 32gb capability?

Not to sure iirc I've seen that for some motherboards the optical drives should go on certain ports.
Also this may use SAS at the MB end so there might not be as many MB sata ports as u r expecting.

Yeah just looked @ Uridium link & just 2 MB SATA ports.

The optical SATA port does work but it's slow. The Microserver has some hacked firmware that enables full speed on the port. It also has an eSATA port so it means it has an additional SATA port.

Not sure if the Remote Access Card comes with this or do you have to purchase it separately? If it comes with it it's even a bigger Bargain as the Microserver's one cost me £60.

I've been playing about with one of these for the last few days - here's my findings:

    1) Windows 7 installation is a bit fiddly trying to get the Matrox G200eh installed
    2) Matrox G200eh struggles in higher resolution (even with opening / moving windows or apps)
    3) Installing a low power pci-e card causes fans to increase, so now becomes fairly loud. This is a known issue apparently
