I sometimes wonder why people bother to post on these forums with all the negative people that post.

If it isn't a £2000 laptop for £20 then "i'm voting cold" "where's the bargin (sp)" etc

Where could you buy a cheaper laptop? Some people on limited budgets might find this a hot deal :)

I work in IT and in the current market you would be buying a doorstop here as the technology will be phased out so quickly you would not have time to blink.

It is better to buy something that has at least some potential in the future rather than buying 'for the moment', especially as certain laptop components are much harder to upgrade.

I couldn't agree more. I have had a Hi-grade for a few years so reliability should not be a problem. They use quality components unlike some other makers!

so this won't write emails and surf the internet? Maybe you work in an IT company that has the latest kit, in the real world a lot of people use kit a lot lot older than this...

I haven't voted but if I did I would vote cold because it only has 256MEG memory, a 40gig hard drive and a cdrwriter/dvd player. I'm pretty sure I've seen laptops improving on this for the same sort of money.

I think the reason some people are voting cold is this.

Below is a laptop for £300 (so only £12 more), made by HP (a better make), with twice the memory, and 50% more hard disk.

Any laptop with only 256Mb of memory is likely to struggle with XP.

And remember that any PC or laptop with integreated graphics does not have its own graphics memory and uses some of the real memory for graphics. (I guess the Hi Grade and HP probably have integrated graphics).

That means a laptop with only 256Mb has actually only got about 200Mb as the rest will be used by the graphics, so XP will struggle even more.

This is not such a problem if a machine has 512Mb of graphics, and that is why that extra 256Mb is so important.

Here's another option for the low end though, its over £60 more but then you do get a faster processor and 1GB memory, bigger hard drive and Vista. Not sure if it's a good deal or not but seems to have good ratings:

I guess it depends what you want the laptop to do. If the price is right (subjective, I know), a laptop of this spec is excellent for putting MEDIAPORTAL or GOMPLAYER, and uTorrent.

Its perfect for downloading torrents, saving them to an external hard drive, and watching it all back on your TV (via S-VHS (if the laptop has it) on SDTV or DVI on HDTV).

...it's what I do with my old laptop anyway... :-)
