Not a HD box they don't.

HOT from me the cheapest HD box currently available.

I have my sat currently pointed at Hotbird 13.0. If I but this set-top box, will I be able to just rotate the satellite to 28.2? Or will I need an entire new satellite dish?

My current dish is an 80cm dish used for free to air satelite channels.

To be fair, I dont know if it works for this receiver, but its possible to change the firmware on many of these boxes to unencrypt many channels. Its not illegal to do this, providing you are not watching channels by this method that are intended for reception in your country.

Every week, I get about 50-60% of premier games. If I paid a subscription, that would increase to nearer 90%.

Google JFK satellite forum to see if this box is capable - or find a better alternative!

I'll have a read when i get home.

But basically, does something like this mean i could plug straight into the Sky dish and fix it to receive foreign / HD channels?

The channels I am referring to are not on the same satellite as sky. (28 East). On your setup, you would be able to pick up BBC HD for example. You couldnt use this box instead of sky (at least not easily) as it doesnt have a videocrypt cam inside it.

I think a lot more reading is needed from me:)

I'm really good when it comes to fixing/modding computers and consoles but i'm always put off doing anything with the TV.

Its all a bit daunting

sounds good but i think i will stick with my relook400s for now

when you leave sky they dont take anything back dish or reciever you could prob get around 20 qud for your old reciever on ebay leaving u even less to pay for this deal

This box is fine with an existing Sky dish/LNB. There are some other channels around on Astra 28.2 which you might not see in the Sky EPG, but they'll be overseas. I'm not aware of any broadcaster doing HD on Astra aside from Sky/BBC/ITV. I think the other HD services from overseas come through on Hotbird, although I may be wrong. Perhaps Eurosport do an HD channel on Astra? looks like a good buy to be honest, most Fressat HD boxes currently seem to be around the £130 mark.

Voted hot... It's not a bad box but I know like a lot of users, mine has a habbit of restarting for some reason. The support is not the best either compared to the likes of Technomate but to fair, given the price it's not a bad deal.

We left Sky during the summer and don't seem to be missing Channel 5 or the Sky Channels or the additional £38 they were fleecing from us. It won't take long to recoup the cost of the box if you cancel Sky and you can use your old dish also, ours is over 10 years old and works fine with the Passion.

We will be looking to upgrade at some point but not until we move house and install a motorised dish...

ive got one of these on a motorised dish, i dont have a rebooting problem, running the latest firmware (v.1.18) on it and its fine.

loads of info on here and beta firmwares

I got an SD Box by the same company - it does find a lot of channels - most of them are pretty rubbish - mainly got the box so my dad can watch the news channels he likes.

He had been using an 8 year old Sky Box (with no subscription) but the trouble with doing that is what channels you can actually watch for free are scattered all over the place - having a non Sky box allows you to put the channels you like in the order you want them in - but took many hours to set up moving the channel up and down to get them in a nice order.

There are very few HD Channels out there I'd be interested to know how well it upscales SD pictures because that's what the majority of channels will be in.
#17
it upscales fine, good pic thorugh hdmi, bbc hd is good now, quite a lot of stuff on it, also itv hd is getting better, champions league games on tuesday are in HD and free.

I just had this email from my old boss. He runs Eurosat, who produce Manhattan STBs and are a competitor of Fortec Star...he doesn't usually mince his words, and has been in the game for years, so I usually trust his opinions (even if they are a bit biased towards his own products!)

By the way the Fortecstar STB is NOT a FREESAT model. It's just an HD receiver that picks up the BBC HD like any other Free to Air HD box does. It does not have MHEG-5 for interactivity (Red Button) and won't get the ITV HD which is via the Red Button MHEG engine.

If anyone can clarify this as an existing owner of the box?

Freesat boxes are the one's authorised to display the FREESAT logo on their hardware and have been tested by the Freesat consortium.

The Passion and other receivers of the same ilk, are free to air boxes that will allow you to receive any free to air tv but not the additional services offered by Freesat such as their own interactive features and EPG.

Hot deal though, tempted to give it a whirl so I can get some HD action, already bought the sky offer last mont that I posted..happy enough with it, I just want to try some HD! Anyone any idea what other channels there is at the moment and will be soon? I gather ITV HD and BBC HD at the moment seems to be about it..

Guys

I have the 'old Sky' digibox - no subscription or contract, receiving the FTA channels.

If I replaced that digibox with this, apart from the HD picture quality, what else (if anything) do I get for my money?

I dont want to add new / move dishes etc.

Thanks
#32
Tempted - though why do they have so many B grade returns?? Sounds like it's a bit on the dodgy side with respect to reliability...

Hi

excuse my ignorance, however, so this will plug in directly into the existing sky sat and without moving will still get all the free sat channels as well as the HD ones?

i only would need to move it IF i wanted say the foreign football channels?

cheers

anyone know what additional channel I could get using this.

i dont want to move or change the sky dish
#36
The HD channels that are FREE TO AIR, that is: ITV HD, BBC HD, CH4 HD (when it comes out) and that rubbish Astra demo channel. You won't get the Sky HD channels, because they are all encrypted.

You'll get all the Freeview Channels + a few European channels and the HD channels such as BBC HD, ITV HD, CH4 HD (when it comes out) and that rubbish Astra HD preview channel. :whistling: De j'a'vous anyone?

Yes you won't need to move your dish at all to pick up all the regular English freesat and HD channels.

The benefit for those that do move their dish is that they can pick up tons of free Premier League football (3 matches Live this Saturday on German tv for example) aswell as box office movies and not to forget the free late night entertainment for grown ups. ;-)

How easy would this be to setup to pick up the footie?

Depends on how deep you want to go!

If you are happy with just one extra satellite (ie you dont want the hassle of a remotely moving dish) then you can do 2 things. Use a bigger single dish than the sky dish you currently have and use 2 LNBs to point discreetly to 2 different satellites (or more if you wish). Or you could simply add a second dish.

Mine is a 1.2 metre dish which is steerable and was installed by myself. I would say you'd have to be pretty dedicated to do it DIY, but its not impossible. Or simply pay your satellite deeler to do if for you and open a whole new TV world!

can you get the scottish games , i was going to buy a motorized hd dish from maplins (think it was £250)
