Excellent! Thanks for the heads up!
Great freebie I got it last year, was so excited, went to Edinburgh only to be taken to hospital urgently ONE hour before castle opened, with acute peritonitis. I was gutted... but then the nurses gave me an individual room with a view on the castle!!! :D Anyway thanks OP.

Great spot - booked up a visit to Stirling castle (been to the one in Edinburgh a few times).

Anyone got any particular recommendations?

Sorry never got back earlier.
Answer you're looking for might depend on YOUR location and transport availability.

I can thoroughly recommend the 3D castles
Dumbarton, Doune and Dirleton.

Dumbarton is relatively compact, has excellent views on clear days, but does have a downside as the internal paths and walkways are quite steep so might not be suitable to everyone.

Doune is excellent with surrounding excellent walks .Look out for the coconuts.

Dirleton is also excellent, especially if you live further east. The extra advantage it has [ if you're up for it] is it's close proximity to Tantallon castle. If you start out early[ish] you can capture two castles in one day.
These castles don't have tearooms, so take a picnic with you, even if you've got to sit in your car because of the weather.

If you will be travelling by car all four are normally easy to park at.
If you've got a VAN, keep the music down.

Have a good weekend. Hope it stays dry for you

Be careful as it might get privatised by then!

Or Scotland will gain independence and without its own currency, we'll go back to trading 2 goats and a bag of salt per month for the membership.

If I were advertising my own country to get the rich english in. I'd be wondering what went wrong in my life.
Rebuild Hadrian's Wall I say.
I'll give you heat just for the picture.
Yes, you might need a passport after May. lol

Why May? The referendum isn't until September...

I have use the St. Andrews free weekend the last 2 years to take the opportunity to visit Edinburgh Castle with the kids they love it, but too expensive at other times of the year. I was surprised that it is not too busy on the day. Well worth visiting some of Scotland's treasures.

This works well with the De Vere hotel deal that I just posted as my first hotdeal:

I just booked for 29th and 30th Nov, but 28th is a black-out date. Hope it helps others but you must book by tomorrow.
Great, thanks.
Sounds like a road trip in the offing for me...

Correct ! You pay for 12 months by DD and then get 6 months free = 18 months in total.
the way i have read it you pay the f irst twelve months then you get the other six months free total eighteen months membership.
[QUOTE=munnski;5256222]If you sign up for the 6months free do you have to pay for the year, ie 6months, or can you cancel after 6months?

Also does anyone know what places you get into as the website doesn't say :?

if you click Find your nearest property there's a download on the left hand side.
A great saving as admission to Edinburgh castle is £12 per adult.

ive been a member of historic scotland for a few years now and find it terrific value for the family membership
it actually used to include free parking at the esplanade at edinburgh castle but commuters found out it was cheaper to pay for a membership and park there for a year than it was to pay edinburgh parking rates for a week
