This unit is powered directly via your computer via the USB cable provided, the unit also turns on or powers down with your computer.

Exactly.... it is has an external power supply.

Also, ignore Comet... the box states 3 year warranty (I purchased one after Christmas, from Comet when they had a 10% discount code).
#5
it may be cheap, but that is one ugly Hard Drive
#6
Good deal - still gonna go the route of getting a docking station and internal sata instead.
#7
Seems an excellent price...

Are you willing to shed loads more for a spanky lacie drive?
#10
FWIW..... if this REALLY is a USB powered drive...which I doubt looking at the size of it... then this should be one freaking hot deal like 999 degrees hot.

discount code not working for me

I checked a few product sites, like scan

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1TB-Hitachi-0S00062-SimpleDrive-Rev-3-Black-Silver-Turbo-USB-35-Ext-Hard-Drive-USB2-PC-MAC

And it seems that the device powers itself on & off when it is connected/disconnected from USB which is probably why the comet person thought it was USB powered. This is not as good as a USB powered drive but I am pretty sure 3.5 drives are never USB powered.

Anyway this is £65 on scan so good price, H&R

I have one of these - it looks ok to me...it's quite small so can be tucked away from site.

It's definitely not USB powered, comes with a power supply. It does auto power on / off on USB connection.

One thing to note is that this came formatted as NFTS as opposed to FAT32 (which is needed to be identified by the PS3) - it took a bit of work to get it formatted as FAT32.

are you saying you were able to plug the hard disk onto a PS3? then it must be a 2.5inch drive, i doubt if there are any 1TB 2.5 drives out yet, you can't access 1TB through FAT32

He means plug the drive into the USB port of the PS3. You only have to use 2.5" HDDs if you want to fit the drive internally into the PS3 because it will not physically fit otherwise.
#16
I got this when it was £53 a few weeks ago

I like it, its stylish and compact compared to other 3.5" external drives. Has a small AC adaptor for power and connects to my PC via mini-USB. Its a bit noisy but it automatically goes to sleep when not in use. The drive inside is a 7200rpm Hitachi 1TB with 32MB cache. Comes with 3-years warranty contary to the imformation on Comets site.

Not in my opinion. I have one and I prefer the look to my Lacie drives that cost twice as much, are twice the size and take up twice as much room. Also the light is around the base and when on looks far nicer than the usual glowing button. It's actually rather pretty.

Recommended.

KevM needs sacking ... what a plum. :whistling:

3.5" drives ARE NOT powered by USB.

Connected via USB - yes .... powered - no.

I have this one also when it's £53 during Christmas. It's smaller than I expected (space saving because it stands vertically), but slightly heavy.
The harddisk inside is Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C (HDS721010CLA332), a bit noisy when coping large amount of data, but better than my another Iomega Select 1TB External Hard Drive.

Recommended!

Can this be used with a iMac if so how?

Delivery is free if you don't want it urgently. Getting mine delivered on the 18th for no extra cost.

Yeah thats right. The max that usb can output is 5v and 3.5" drives need 12v and therefore an external power supply. You could of course go the diy route and hook up a molex connector on your pc psu to an external socket on the case but that would kinda defeat the point of having a portable drive :)

lacie's are rubbish anyway...my 320gb lasted 1 week, got a 500gb warranty replacement from lacie though
#26

Just ordered one for my self..

blimey, an argument about which is the best looking hard drive......what next which graphics card looks sexier

Paid £53.09 + quidco and free delivery just before Christmas for this from Comet. It's a hard drive not an ornament; seems to work fine. It has a power supply which automatically powers up when you read or write to the drive.
A great deal at this price, but now I can't stop looking at it!

Will this work on the xbox 360 so i can play my movies and pics through there or will i have to do something ?

It's a bit fiddly re-formatting to Mac OS Extended (to allow for large file transfer and full compatability) using Disk Utility but it can be done. I Googled & found a way but have since forgotten (mind like a sieve) - you'll have to search yourself, but yes, it can be done.
#32
Just reserved one to pick up tonight. Decent price and product gets good reviews across multiple websites. Hitachi website confirms 3 year warranty. I've been waiting to get a decent 1TB drive, but wanted a good/reliable make - this looks just the business. Have some H&R

HI, did yo get your from Comet as well? So the 3 year warranty you got is provided by the manufacture? Many thanks.

Just for reference 1TB portable drives are available in PC World. I have just bought one!! Not cheap £140. This is a good price for a decent product, and is very simple to use with a mac, using disk utilities, just Google it.

There are no discount codes

I went through the ordering process, for both Pick and Home Delivery, but there were no options to add the discount codes so I called Comet and spoke to a sales rep. I told him the situation, he asked for the prodcut code and the discount codes (5% - 5ALLHD, 10% - 10REFR17), both codes have apparently expired.
He did say that if there was a valid code it would have been available on the Comet site, not sure what he meant.
