Good price but very noisy external harddrive. I returned mine to tesco and now using Seagate Freeagent.

Great thing I like about this drive. Linked to my WD media player, it goes into auto-standby when I put the media player in to standby.

Sad but true - another reason not to get off my a*se I know!

I agree i got this drive and its noisy , it makes quite loud noises even though its not doing anything , i cant take it back though as i fitted it inside my pc :(

Why is this on the main page? 1TB hard drives can be had cheaper elsewhere - http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/656555/wd-elements-external-hard-drive-1tb

Stone cold from me, even though I own the drive in the deal, its simply not worth it for £60.

For those that say the Hitachi is too noisy for 70p more there's this one

can i use this on my PS3

You can but you will need to reformat it in to FAT32 file format if you want to watch things straight off the drive on your ps3 as the PS3 will not recognise any harddrives in NTFS.

I recently upgraded my ps3 from 250GB to 500GB, placed the 250GB HDD into a caddy and reformatted it using this little program http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm

I used that program instead of Swiss Knife as Swiss Knife isn't compatable with Windows Vista!

3 year warranty, when the others have two though. I have two of these drives, very well made.

Seagate freeagent drives have got 5 year warranty.

I don't suppose you can tell me how you opened the case, as I can't figure out how to open it!!

I have a feeling that they may have changed the drive design though, as mine isn't noisy at all.

does this also have a ethernet connection? thanks!

Yes, just reformat to FAT32 (google FAT32 over 32GB for suitable program) and off you go.
I have one and it switches on + off with PS3

No! this one has got only USB connectivity.

I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago, from Tesco (there was a voucher for £10 off). Mine's not noisy, it's fine.
#15
i just got one of these as i had two seagates before which got the click of death!!! lovely quiet little thing. much better than the seagate alternative.
#16
Mine isn't noisy at all and it sits about 20cm from my ear while I'm at my PC. I get great transfer speeds also.

Seems to be a devide in opinions though. I would recommend seeing one in action if you are unsure about it,

Oh by the way, if you are thinking of reformatting this, bear in mind a full FAT32 reformat of 1GB will probabley take 9-12 hours!(?)

More like about 15 seconds. Just do a quick format, using anyone of hundreds of free tools.

Hence why I mentioned FULL reformat. I don't know what the disadvantages of a quick format are, so when i reformatted my 250GB HDD, I left it over night!

But yeah, turns out if the drive is brand new, just do a quick format! If the drive is old and may be damaged, do a full format, as this way, the disk is checked for bad sectors.

The only time I've done a full format on a disk was when the disk arrived unformatted, and it had to be done. But that was many years ago on a 6 Gb drive! Any drive larger than 100 Gb tends to arrive formatted nowadays, so a quick format is all that is needed.

To be honest, while your point about old, possibly damaged disks is valid, if there is any doubt it's often safer to bin the drive and get a new one. If I saw any signs of a hard drive failing, I wouldn't try and reuse it. The check done during format isn't exactly thorough either, so it's just not worth the risk.

I got one of these with the last Tesco deal. No way would I describe it as noisey.

£5 off code now applies.

Enter this code a the end of checkout to get £5 off anything over £50. Free Delivery wasn't available for me (£5 delivery to southern Scotland), but store pick was free. Code is

tdx-ccbx

There is also a £10 off code for purchase over £100.

tdx-ccb2

This brings the price down to a competitve £54.67. I can't see any other 1TB available that are cheaper than this.
