What makes the Western Digital one much better than the Hitachi one ? I've got the 1TB Hitachi one and it's excellent - but is it not likely to last as long or something ? Thanks - not too well up in such things lol !

Nothing, it's just another persons opinion, I have both a WD external and the 1TB Hitachi and both are equally good IMHO.

The vast majority of drives are trouble free, it's just that we hear about the small percentage of drives that go faulty. :)

I think it's a better Idea to pick up one of the £63 bare samsung drives that have been floating around here, then pick up a caddy for about £10 (or get a eSATA/USB3 one for a bit more) and you have the versatility of sticking the drive in a PC for large data transfers if you ever need to, as well as the option of upgrading to eSATA/USB3 in the future.

Though having said that I have found these external Hitachi drives to be very reliable (I have the 1TB version of this same drive) not only are they physically quite small compared to other hard drives, but they crucially have a small and light power adapter (it's just a plug, no transformer/voltage converter) which means it's a bit more feasible to take them to a mate's house etc.

Can't be delivered to you so it's cold?? Do you vote down instore deals if there's not one near to you too?

I've also got one of these drives, and find it's power down facility very useful. Most external drives stay switched on while they're plugged in, even if the host PC is off. With these, they shut down if the USB port goes off.

For me this means I can have it permanently connected to my blu ray player, ready to power on when the player is switched on and stream video.

I paid only £30 cheaper for the 1TB version, so I vote this hot.

This feature was actually a big hassle for me as Ubuntu doesn't seem to spin this drive up properly for me (had it running on Ubuntu 9.10 with XBMC installed) may have just been that particular version of Ubuntu however. My Windows PC & Mac had no problems.

Are most external drives silent these days ?.

The drives themselves are quiet, but you can sometimes get vibrations through whatever it's sitting on or touching. I have mine sat on the blu ray player, and sometimes if it's sitting on an unsupported part of the case I can hear buzzing when the drive spins up. I just shift it an inch or so to the side.

I do know what you mean. I have a USB remote control that only powers up when it's needed, and for some reason it gets it's knickers in a twist. It can be a pain in some situations.

What would worry me about the Argos outlet store on fleabay is that i've seen the big cage on wheels they chuck returns in at my local store, especially after christmas when all the open box returns come in, and trust me they do CHUCK them in there ! and things hard drives do not fair well when they've been thrown around !
