Assuming it has a Deskstar 7K4000 drive inside it, 26.1mm, the same as lower capacity drives.

£180 incl. vat/p&p on regular ebuyer: http://www.ebuyer.com/339425-hitachi-4tb-touro-desk-pro-usb-3-0-hard-drive-0s03504
internal version of the 7k400 is £250-270 elsewhere, for some reason hitachi drives are often cheaper externally - guess the warranty is lower or something....?
still think i'd go with 2x2tb for backup, 4tb is a lot of data to lose (unless you buy two).
But how much 'real' space do you actually get? 3.2TB?
But could I take this apart and use it as my main HDD for my OS?

you'd have to be insane to use a 4tb drive as your main os, that's what a small ssd is for.
plus there's various issues with booting off >2tb drives (uefi bios, gpt partition table etc.)
with the 5% filesystem overhead and manufacturer's insistence on using 1000 instead of 1024 for gigabytes, i'd assume this would format as 3.8tb maximum, which concurs with my 2tb giving me 1.9tb (and 1tb = 0.93tb) when using JFS. not sure about NTFS though.
Did you check the serial number online to see if it came up with any warranty??
