For those not in the know, the freeview playback is a new feature which will allow users to easily record entire series (like a season link). It should also allow the box to start and stop recording at the correct time even if the program starts early or late.

I have not seen this feature on a PVR under £100 before so voted hot.

I bought one of these from eBay last year for my father and have been very impressed by it. I have a Humax PVR-9200T so I’m used to a quality PVR and this even has features that the Humax lacks. It was a steal at the £35 I paid for it.

I got the wharfedale 160gb with freeview playback for £75 from argos 3 months ago so they are around.

this deal is good mind.

I've just bought a twin-tuner Digihome PVR80 for £45 and I'm really impressed - the software is great, it's nice and responsive, it has an excellent set of features; all in all it is far better than my old Humax 8000T. That being said, if I had seen this, I'd definitely have gone for it instead - with the Freeview playback features at this price, it's a bargain!

Series link will only be available if this PVR conforms to the Freeview Playback Group 2 standard. Group2 is fairly new. I don't know if this PVR has it, but at this price I would be surprised.
Even so, looks like a good deal.

No, as it does not have an mpeg encoder. It just records the digital stream from the freeview then decodes it on playback.

You need something with an encoder built in like a dvd recorder with hard disk.

Thanks you have just saved me a lot of to and throwing, will have alookout for a dvd recordable with hardrive.

Nope - freeview only. As someone says earlier, these type of Freeview Playback boxes only record the digital freeview streams and decode the streams for playback.

This question is asked on practically every pvr thread and the simple answer is no these units do not record from external sources. I believe the only pvr that can record from sky or cable is the Tivo that can be found on ebay. So to state once more, pvr units from Topfield, Humax, etc etc etc will not record from external sources.

Picked up one of these this morning but just noticed they've given me the HDR081 model?
#18
I've checked 3 Argos's and they all only had the HDR081

It's probably the usual Argos thing of reusing the same catalogue number when they get an upgraded model

I suspect that the HDR082 won't be stocked until the HDR081 is sold out / removed from the shelves

Been using the recorder for a couple days now and apart from it being the older model, I cant think of a single bad thing to say.

It's silent when not recording (it doesn't have a fan) and the noise when recording is quieter than a VCR.

It's simple to operate, picture quality is a big improvement on our old freeview box and playback quailty is excellent. (much better than a VCR).

I think this is excellent value at £70. The old freeview box is going upstairs and the VCR is going to the dump!

Many thanks to OP for posting!

if anyone who has this could answer the following....

when you use the EPG to set the recording can you overide the start/finish time? ie. add a few mins to the end to ensure it all records.

how may aerial sockets are there? is it just one to supply both tuners?

it will be for my 70 year old mum who's VCR has just broken down, she would just stick a tape in the VCR put it on long play and hit record even if the programme didnt start for hours :p this is as easy as it gets?

thank you.
