I've built a chalet and a few sheds from scratch. I've done a lot of odd jobs including decking and some involving masonry drilling. The Makita 12v is certainly up to any of the diy jobs I can think of. I've used an 18 volt hitachi and the makita was better. This of course is my preference and my opinion. I believe professional builders etc. will buy products way above this range so anyone looking at this will be a DIYer, so I felt obliged to push the Makita. My wife often says I'm talking out my rrrrr's so maybe she's right. :-D

On the Makita vs Hitachi point, whilst I don't have drills from both manufacturers I do have a Makita 4341FCT jigsaw and a Hitachi DV14DL combi drill. Both tools are good but IMHO the Hitachi is better built, more robust and nicer to use, not much in it though.
