I was in my local Argos down in Bromley near the Woolworths. They had over 30 of these beauties left as Manager's Specials but the boxes were perfect, as were their contents. I could have paid £5 extra for a Sony (they only had 2 in) but prefer the SD format as far cheaper to get memory.

If you are ever in this branch they have a lot of deals, they still had 20 Panasonic Freeview boxes for under £25, loads of cordless Panasonic headphones for around £15, and other goodies. I turned these down as well as a large dalek which was on sale in Waterstones at half price.

No doubt and fingers crossed these offers can be found in a few more stores like this.

The code had been overstickered (was 5605620) but mine was 593/1198. This doesn't enter onto the website. Good luck

As far as I know they are just rebadged cheapo cameras, made by Premier of Taiwan

I bought 2 of the HDC-551E's before Xmas, they're rubbish and both faulty.

Having read on this forum earlier that Hitachi do not make digital camera's, I thought I would contact Hitachi as they did not have any digital camera's on their European website.

Asking the question about if they made these camera's, they could not tell me. They also do not offer any customer support as it seems that these camera's are not imported into Europe by Hitachi. Apparently, they are called exclusive models and are imported from outside Europe directly by the retailers according to the email reply from Hitachi.

So, if you buy a Hitachi Digital Camera, don't expect to get any manufacturer support because you won't get it. To be honest, I'm more concerned about the sourcing of Hitachi camera's, if you can't even find these camera's on the manufacturer's European website, how would you even know if they are the genuine article in the first place, just a thought!

The Hitachi HDC-651E and the HDC-551E are identical physically.

Thanks to Adidas Addict (guided me to Premier), these two models at least appear to be Premier.

http://www.rangekhial.ir/PremierOptical.htm - Scroll down to model no. DC-5371 shown on the right (third on the list). Compare the image, a bit small I know but can be compared to - http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5605620.htm

Looks absolutely identical to me.

It appears that we do have a cheapo camera branded as Hitachi. Mine are both in for repair, when I go back to Argos I will ask them for an explanation.

Seems the moral of this story is don't buy a Hitachi Digital Camera at any price.

Looks like a cheapo Premier to me. I've emailed Hitachi to ask further.

A little bit more trawling to come up with the following:-

Hitachi HDC-551E appears to be the same as a Premier DC 5371

Hitachi HDC-751E appears to be the same as a Premier DC 7370

Hitachi HDC-756E appears to be the same as a Premier DM 7365

Hitachi DS-A651 appears to be the same as a Premier DS A650, although casing is manufactured in a different colour.

I am more than a bit peeved to discover that these are seemingly rebadged cheapo's as I bought them because of the Branding, assuming that they were a Hitachi designed and developed product, which is now in some doubt.

Hitachi also rebadge other cheapo makes such as wharfedale. Avoid them as they are no longer the once great company they used to be, they've become like Dixons and Currys.

Hi,

I bought an 8 megapixel hitachi hdc 861e digital camera from argos. It was on sale for £64.99 reduced from £139.99. The camera is very poor quality, my 3 megapixel kodak takes better pics.

I can't take the camera back because argos won't accept it back and I can't get in touch with thr hitachi premier staff.

What should I do? I'm thinking of going to the citizens advice bureau.
