Just to get confirmation form someone that is more Computer/technical minded; does this need an external power source or is itpowered off the USB? i cant stand the extra wires with the mains powered drives.

Thank you in Advance :)

All 3.5" Usb drives need a power supply,

From the fact it says "Automatically powers on or off with your computer" in the description, I would make the assumption it is USB powered.

No that means it annoyingly doesn't have an on / off switch, but can detect whether your PC is on or not.

Thank you, thank you and you. Much appreciated. Will wait for an offer that is powered off the USB. I have a mains powered drive and never use it as really cant be bothered plugging/unpugging etc (i use a laptop so not in a fixed position, wheras with a desktop i am sure it would not be a problem.) :)

All 3.5inch external drives require power and they always will. The USB standard only allows for so much power to be delivered by a USB socket and 3.5inch drives need a certain minimum power draw that USB can not meet. You will get blood from a stone before it's possible to get enough power from USB to power 3.5inch drive.

If you really must have USB powered then you are limited to 2.5inch portable (sometimes called passport) drives. The cost per Gb of space is much higher but that's the premium you have to pay for smaller size and lack of power brick.

Also 2.5" drives don't go over 500GB at the moment, so all 500GB + drives are mains powered.

I had a lacie external with no on/off power switch, it was a pain in the a55....

I think 70 is becoming the accepted norm for a 1tb external now anyway?
