The plugs on their own are £30 each, with the hub for £52 and the other sensors at around £30 each

I believe its a zigbee protocol so compatible with a whole load of other smart hubs

This is not zigbee. It's z-wave. So not compatible.

It is zigbee. The videos Ive seen suggest it is, the hive thermostat boot sequence mentions zigbee and this guy http://hivehomeforum.co.uk/?page_id=21 has well documented it as zigbee

It's based on the same technology as AlertMe which is zigbee but with extras (allowed by the ZigBee protocol). I have both z-wave and AlertMe, to be honest zigbee is a whole lot more reliable, but without the vast array of devices. Oh and don't expect compatibility between different ZigBee devices, it's bad enough with z-wave, but ZigBee takes it to a whole new level.

When IFTTT is introduced "soon" it should be compatible with lots more devices. They have added the hive lights and hive heating to IFTTT this year

The problem with IFTTT is that it's not really very useful for real time applications, such as you've walked into the hall, turn on the lights. I've been playing with home automation for years, and there are always two problems, 1) ensuring the trigger has actioned correctly, and 2) make sure the action happens fast enough.

The moment the internet gets included in the equation, you can kiss goodbye to both, for a heating control, it probably doesn't matter, but if like in my house, the alarm is triggered, the lights come on, the cameras start recording and the dumping stills to the internet and footage to a remote server somewhere else in the house, can't see IFTTT working effectively in this scenario, if I have to ask a device to turn on the lights, it's not going to take long before I end up going back to using light switches.

Unless home automation is ultimately powered by a PC or hub, based in the home without resorting to communicating with some server in the 'cloud' it's never going to be a good solution, especially security applications or those that need fast response times. So far I've not seen anyone demonstrate how any of these home based voice recognition systems work better than a remote control or touch screen interface.

I'm not sure the best use of smart light bulbs is as the main room light either tbh...mood lighting and lamps are better suited
