  It's part of their "swap shop" deal - people bring stuff in and get a set price to use as money off a purchase, HMV sell them off at a set price. You can't get cash, just credit. It used to be £1 per item, but when I took stuff in last time they'd knocked it down to 50p per item, so I told them where to stick it and went elsewhere! Someone was a bit of a numpty to only get 50p for Downton Abbey! X)

  The Blu-rays are ex-rentals from Blockbuster.

  As far as I know hmv near me does not sell used blu-rays or take them as exchange (as they do with games). Fopp however, do appear to sell what looks like ex rental crap all in pretty rotten condition, so perhaps hmv have decided to take this pretty desperate route.
  
  What they should do is sack half of their useless staff (whose combined knowledge of film I could write on a postage stamp), halve the dvd section / double the blu-ray section (stop buyin dvds already ffs)! and start selling ALL their stuff at a competitive price.
