Thursday, 10am. One of the biggest in the country and the only one in a town centre. Traffic is going to be mental..

seems useful for storage at end of bed.
#6
Are these solid enough to sit on? Like, put a cushion on top and use it as a seat

Exactly what I thought

I have one of these that I have oiled. I'm sure it is walnut though, not oak

Yes, I have one and it gets used as a seat all the time. It actually feels a lot more solid than some ikea seats I have!

We have the samll one and i've sat on it a few times. Holds a lot of clothes as well.

These are good, but two things to note:

1) It's a pain that the lids aren't hinged (I only have the cube version and fitted hinges myself; I can imagine the larger version's lid is quite heavy);
2) It's a pain to varnish or oil them because of all the crevices you have to fill!

Good points, thanks! I was thinking of this as something for the end of the bed that could be a seat as well, but I would rather have something with hinges and without the crevices.

how bad is the standard finish on them? is varnishing a must?
#14
Why would the finish be bad? Isn't it oak?

My thought exactly. I wouldn't want to "ruin" it by staining or varnishing it.

Just to let you know that Coventry has had a city centre Ikea for over a year!
To be honest it's only busy over the weekends, and has plenty of parking.
the cafe is full of students who use the Family card to get free teas and coffees at off peak times.

Anyway thanks for the post great price.

I think you miss the point. The finish is good - as smooth as you'd get on any piece of furniture. However, the reason for varnishing or waxing is to protect it because in the bare state it will get stained very easily.

Also, varnishing or waxing will bring out the colour and pattern of the wood much more than it shows in its raw state.

Because its ikea and they are often quite rough on bare wood

the finish is smooth and ready to stain/varnish/paint might be oak but the pic does no justice....its not that horrible yellow pine....I have 3 smaller ones 2 are used as stools with padded cushions at my lounge bay window....sturdy/solid as hell compared to usual Ikea bumf...I rarely buy furniture at Ikea for that very reason

thats almost half regular price, I will need to get one, having spent £60 on the smaller ones I couldnt justify the almost £40 for the bigger one....I went to Ikea with a budget of £150 & stuck to it.....glad I did now, Ikea visit now planned, it will be like buy 1 get 1 free LOL
