One for Wire fans who didn't catch Homicide first time round - 4 Disks in the first box, 5 in the second. Normally these box sets cost £25-40.

One of the most critically acclaimed shows in TV history, Homicide: Life On The Street re-invigorated a tired genre by focusing on the grueling work of solving murders instead of an endless succession of bloody crimes and car chases.

Inspired by David Simon's (The Wire, Treme) Edgar Award-winning account of Baltimore homicide detectives and brought to television by director Barry Levinson (Diner), writer Paul Attanasio (Gideon's Crossing), Homicide boasted a powerhouse cast featuring Ned Beatty (Deliverance), Yaphet Kotto (Alien), Richard Belzer (Law & Order: SVU), and breakout star Andre Braugher (Frequency). The critical response was overwhelming: Homicide won multiple Emmy and Writer's Guild of America Awards and is one of just two shows in history to claim three Peabody Awards.

Now, Homicide debuts on DVD with this collector's set featuring all 9 episodes from the first season

Damnit, somewhere reduce seasons 3 and 4 to a fiver! I have 1, 2 and 5 so far, all for 5/6 quid.
#2
Haven't seen the series but just bought the book yesterday.

I'm really trying to get into this, my girlfriend got bored after the first few episodes (we both loved The Wire). I think the first series suffers from being so dated now. I have bought the second series too and must persevere as everyone on here seems to like it.

Excellent series, and at such a great price - ordered

Snap, I got bored after about 4 eps, really have to try and finish it. My boyfriend and I love The Wire so I want to enjoy this but it's so cheesy or something :?

Very well written series - just ordered them both.

Bought seasons 1-6 off the HMV deal a while ago. Started watching it this week and I knew it was great as soon as the Montell Williams scene. The conversations-about-nothing scenes remind me of when Tarantino was at his best. The air con episode got on my nerves a bit, good character building but the background music was suffocating! Very nineties.

Wikipedia tells me there is a season 7 and a movie which is the "de facto" finale. HMV only have seasons 1-6, so is wiki lying to me? I heard season 7 is a cross over with Law & Order or something, but I am not researching this as every website contains spoilers! So if someone could give me an answer without ruining it that would be great (I hope there is no season 7 as no one seems to stock it!)

err im not sure lol, amazon have a complete boxset that sais seasons 1-6, but in info bit sais contains all 122 episodes, and wikipedia has that as the total amount of epsiodes.
link to it on amazon

I haven't watched this for years but I loved it so much when it was originally on. I have the book but it's been sitting on the shelf for a year as I don't have time to read it. The book isn't like a retelling of the series, more it was the original inspiration and the recording of the author's experiences in following the PD (I think)

yes there were 7 seasons and a final movie length episode.
Also be aware that some of the seasons contained crossover episodes with Law & Order which when the complete series was released came on a seperate disc so the seasons may not have the Law and Order episodes on them.

from looking around it seems the uk version is

Series 1 = Series 1+2 ( as its 13 episodes in total - S1 = 9, 'S2' = 4)
Series 2 = Series 3
Series 3 = Series 4
Series 4 = Series 5
Series 5 = Series 6
Series 6 = Series 7

so the complete boxset S1-6 is all the tv series,

Great show, once it gets going its amazing. So much better than the wire

Never really liked Homicide but as I'm a huge Law & Order but I had to watch the crossover epsidoes to get the full story plus Much was in Homicide (among other shows) so it wasn't all bad.

I too found the show a bit dated and boring but it is a bargain at that price.

It IS an old series - nevertheless it's watchable because it focuses on people not arcane (and mostly made-up) CSI techniques or psychics hearing records in their heads or other utter nonsense.

I borrows from the book (mainly the Layonya Wallace case - she's called Edina Watson in the TV series) and there are at least 2 Law and Order 'crossover' events IIRC?

Watch out for Jake "Prince of Persia" Gyllenhall early on - he's about 10 - and this is what Michelle Forbes did between Star Trek and BSG too :)

It droops a bit in the last series - mainly because the best characters have mostly left by this time. People were also choosing "Nash Bridges" over this - which only goes to show how little people know...

The 'wrap up' movie they did reintroduces many characters and wraps it all up nicely tho...

p.s. beware the episode running order - esp in Series 2. The network switched episodes around to compete with other networks which actually puts some shows out of chronological order (the disappearance of Steve Crosetti mainly). Not sure how the DVDs deal with that...

They have really messed up with the numbering of the series' as series 2 only had 4 episodes

series 1 boxset is £4.99 and only contains the first 9 episodes

series 2 boxset is £4.99 and contains 20 episodes which are actually SERIES 3!:w00t:

series 1 & 2 boxset is 13 episodes which is correct but is £13.99 so not sure why this deal even exists! :w00t:

Good price for these. Like several earlier posters have said it does feel a bit dated now when compared to its succesor, but still an enjoyable (as far as murder can be...) watch.
The suspicious side of me thinks that reducing these regularly is an attempt to get interest, possibly leading on to purchases of the much more expensive sequels. These never seem to be reduced by anything like as much.

Ah thanks for clarifying that for me. I hate it when they release seasons on dvd numbered differently to the tv seasons. Family guy do it.
What about the movie? No UK sellers stock it (it comes up with some really shoddy looking Harrison Ford film). I really don't want to have to torrent it having built up a good looking collection.

Prices now £5.99 each. Series 1 can be had cheaper at Amazon for £5.

I think the bit in red is wrong, despite what it says on the Play description. I've just received my sets, and the 'Series 1' boxset for £4.99 in this offer has 13 episodes according to the box and the discs (i.e. Series 1+2).

Thanks again WessexUnderwater!
