Hornby Southern Star Train Set HALF PRICE
was £119.9 now only £59.99 @ Argos

I got a similar set to this last year (Midland Flyer) to form the basis of a layout I built my son for Christmas.

Set Details:

Hornby Southern Star Train Set.
Southern Star Train Set is fantastic value and comes with an 0-4-0 steam locomotive, assorted wagons, trackside accessories; an oval of track with siding, train controller and trakmat .
It is brilliant value for the beginner or someone looking to add to their existing train set. .

It doesn't mention it, but this includes Track Pack A, hence the siding.

Suitable for ages 5 years and over.

EAN/Barcode: 5010963411329.

If like me you'd like to build on this, and would prefer to design your own layout, rather than use the included Trak-Mat, then I can highly recommend AnyRail (demo available) which includes a database of Hornby track sections, so it essentially provides you with a shopping list of additional track sections to buy. However, for ease of use, and a great layout which can be built up in stages using Trak Packs (spreading the cost!), I have to admit the Trak-Mat is a fantastic idea.

Yes, I noticed that, I can't believe that big companies like Argos can allow spelling errors to pass through, even happens on the TV EPG.Still, like everything else seems to be these days, I guess most Hornby stuff probably is made in China!

For those wondering what the Trackmat is, it allows you to easily build up a great looking layout in stages by buying additonal track and building packs.

On a bit of a tangent my son has lots of wooden Thomas track pieces and Im wondering would this AnyRail allow me to put in the pieces he has and it would then give me various layouts based on the available track.
If not is there something else that would?
Heat added BTW.

brilliant

Poor value at 'list' price IMHO but a good deal at 60 quid.

I guess this is an Argos special set as I can't see it at the usual model railway discounters such as Hattons, Rails of Sheffield etc.

No, Anyrail does not include the 'Brio style' tracks which I think you are describing, it only includes electric tracks.

From memory, I think it's preloaded with Peco & Hornby track at OO and N scale, from which it allows you to design any form of layout, and can as I did be set with dimensions for your layout, so you can be sure everything will fit in.I don't think it can generate layouts based on available sections though, so perhaps the best thing would be to just similar hornby pieces and try a few ideas out.I got a lot of help and inspiration from various sites with layout examples etc, good luck!

Although it's not super accurate in the past i've just photographed the various Brio style track pieces and then made copies of them in an image editing programme, then used that to make up a layout in a sort of jigsaw fashion.

Seems you're not alone with wanting to try brio designs, as I've just found this site which I hope may be useful to you... http://www.aracnet.com/~seagull/brioray/index.html

Yes, I think these sets are basically designed to sell at about £60, but at that price offer really great value, as a means of introducing people to hornby, and with the Trakmat, encourage people to buy the, by comparison more expensive track pack's.This set is made for Argos, and there have been many similar sets, with the same rather generic 0-4-0 loco made for others including Woolworths in the past.I found it was cheaper to buy another set at this price to get some of the extra track, controller, PSU I needed and so on, and then sell the loco, accessories and wagons on eBay, than to buy the parts seperately, but then your ideas become bigger, and so did the layout, so it never stops!

Good price, thanks.

HOT HOT HOT deal, especially as it's now half price.

Has anyone actually bought one of these already, perhaps paying the £119.99 by any chance?
Has it ever been available at that price?

18 months ago, similar kits were going for about £30.

I doubt if anyone ever paid 120 quid, however 30 quid is a very low price for that sort of set. Here's a similar set at Modelzone for 65 quid, also a good deal:-

http://www.modelzone.co.uk/model-railways/train-sets/blue-highlander-train-set.html

Presumably to stay legal Argos would've offered it at that price for a while.

Here's another very similar set on the actual Hornby site for 80 quid, which is probably closer to a real 'street' (as in toy shop) price IMHO:-

Tesco are selling the Western Messenger for £60 here: http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.209-8579.aspx
and the Devon Flyer for £59.97 here: http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.206-2178.aspx

So it seems to me their are a fair few of these cheap hornby train sets floating around so take you pick.

The Tesco sets although basically the same price, aren't as good value, as they don't come with the extra accessories that this set does, and the Devon Flyer, doesn't include the extra Track Pack either.
At the end of the day (hate using that phrase) the original price is perhaps rather inflated, I think you'd expect the normal price to be around £79.99 for this type of set, however there is no doubt that this is a very good price bearing in mind that you not only get the Train set, but you also get the Track Pack A and quite a few accessories, so all in all, great value for money! And trust me the accessories are worth having, I paid about £3.00 each just for a buffer!

Stock of the £30 Coastal Freight set someone mentioned about I think was aquired by many stores very cheaply after Woolworths collapsed, which is why they were able to sell them on at ridiculous low prices, although Woolworths ironically started the discounting on this set in the first place, going from £79.99 to £39.99

The small Hornby Devon Flyer Set (small oval +3 wagons) mentioned above @ Tesco for £59.97 is overpriced, it usually sells for about £49.99 as it's a more basic set.I found it Amazon for £48.95 with FREE SS delivery... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hornby-R1121-Devon-Flyer-Gauge/dp/B00260GAN8.A good price, if you want a smaller set, if not the Southern Star is still the best value.

Southern Star Set

As you can see by the contents, you get a lot more for the extra tenner!
