Start with a collection - The Genuine Article on Chess is the best collection :-D but this one is also pretty sound and a great price. Once you move on (!) the Howlin Wolf/ Moanin in the Moonlight and Live in London are good

If you like the Wolf, also listen to Ian Seigal who has the voice of Wolf on much of his stuff but also has some superb new blues.
This is by NotNow records, which is a UK company that takes advantage of music copyright laws which last for only 50 years. Basically these recordings are in the public domain, sometimes they are recdorded straight off vinyl, or allegedly sometimes even cd's. Copyright laws for UK companies has been 50 years; hence no 60's recordings here like Killing Floor. Mind you, it also means you're guaranteed not to have to put up with any of that London rubbish when they thought pairing Wolf with a bunch of salivating, overrated, yet inferior British blues musicians like Eric Clapton (if you think Clapton is a proper 'blues' player you are simply clueless.)

What this means is that they offer these cd's so cheap because they pay absolutely NO royalties to musicians (or as with Howlin, his estate) producers, musicians etc. The more reputable companies like Ace/Kent, Stateside and Shout/RPM do, which is why their sets are usually more expensive. Seeing as the European Parliament has just approved a 20 year extension to copyright for music, wouldn't be surprised if companies like Proper and Not Now go out of business. Demand for 1930's music isn't really too big these days!

I have one box set from Not Now, the great Ray Charles, to be honest the sound quality is not too inferiror as on the complete ray charles box set. Liner notes are very generic, almost like a Wikipedia biography, packaging is nice (in a gatefold cardboard box) and on the sleeve is surnames of writers and year recorded. Not very detailed, but at least it's something.

I might get this, seeing as Hip-O select seem intent on releasing every other Chess blues artist apart from the great Chester. Have most of these tracks on the 2-for-1 Howlin' Wolf/Moaning in the Moonlight, for this price it's worth getting a few more tracks from the man's peak period.
