Also FYI

According to Microsoft's own knowledge base article 929605, all 32-bit versions of Vista support up to 4GB of memory, but the actual usable address space will be less than 4GB. The reason for this is that a section of the memory is set aside for memory map interfaces. This is generally a space that is set aside to ensure driver compatibility and the amount used will vary depending upon the devices installed in the system. Typically, a system with 4GB of RAM will report only 3.5GB of addressable space.

That's Microsoft for you....

There is also the Page File/Virtual Memory that uses a part of the Hard Drive. Vista has been a disaster for business use but is fine for home use- Voted this Hot with 4GB installed excellent value for £359

OK, not exactly perfect, but how much RAM is that you are "wasting?"

About a fiver's worth at today's low RAM prices?

As it happens my system effectively uses a bit under 3.7Gb of RAM as the Graphics takes up about 345Mb and then Windows uses the rest of what it can.
I don't lose a lot of sleep over the little bit it isn't using.

Awesome deal, hopefully my heat puts in on the front page. Although a Intel fan, this is awesome value for money even before the cashback!

Graphic card 01 Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100

Something is not right here. Since when intel start to produce integrated graphics for AMD platform? O.o

Lol Windows has had virtual memory paging files since v3.1 in the early 90's IIRC. Linux and MacOS both use whole swap partitions too, so not sure what you're advocating there with regards to Vista?! Business adoption has been low to now but that doesn't make it a bad OS as such.

Eh? What's wrong with microsoft's adoption of 64-bit? I thought they were doing it fairly well.
#9
On the HP redemption page it shows as valid only for product number KU224ET in the 6735s series. Looking that up brings this which includes an AMD ZM-82 CPU, not the one on offer at Ebuyer.

Just something to be wary about if you're thinking about it, you probably won't get the cashback.
#10
Accoriding to HP.com this laptop has an AMD HD 3200 graphics chip, not an Intel X3100. (Intel graphics on an AMD platform...I don't think so)

Even better deal now imo, HD 3200 is a much better chip and has hardware support for video playback.
#11
Do not assume the cash back is for this model.

This is the model with 19 ghz processors. The cash back is for 2.2 ghz processor models.

It would be impossible for ANY 32bit operating system to allow you to access all 4GB of the theoretical address space, because you need addresses reserved for stuff such as devices. They can't make wine from water, go 64bit if this is an issue for you.
#13
Maybe They can't "make wine from water" but I know a man that can :-D

If that's the case then this is definitely a good price for a HP laptop.

I agree, the cashback is VERY specific on the model number which is on the 2.2 ghz model, it even excludes the one on the HP site which is 2.0 ghz, so this 1.9ghz definitely won't qualify - shame that.
#16
The laptop has an ok cpu, more than enough memory (memory is cheap as chips tbh though) and only integrated graphics. For £400 doesn't seem such a great deal to me.

are you sure you're not looking at this model on HP?

That one is higher spec but with the same model number.

I have been looking on ebuyer for the past couple of days for a new laptop. I was originally looking to buy this:

Can you advise which you think is the better buy....

I work in IT and have not seen many jobs advertised asking for "vista" certifications-people are still studying for MCSA/MCSE 2003 because they will get you work. Sorry Vista has been out long enough now to confirm it is a disaster at business level. Vista Business does not even come with Hyperterminal! XP Pro will be around for some time yet. I mentioned the page file because a lot of people are still unaware of it, and that it can be altered. I would be happy to use Vista at home but NO WAY at work

No you don't. That is totally untrue.
You know OF a dead man who is mythically alleged to have done this once.

Don't push religion to me, I see you have done it on other threads too. It is offensive to me and many others as well as being totally off topic

I won't see you posts again, as you are now on my IGNORE list, so I can avoid seeing this sort of junk again. Don't bother getting "lippy" about it, I won't even see it :-)

Can you please tell me where is states only for 2.2GHZ processors? It only states the model i.e. 6735s or maybe I missed that part?

Yes, some of us get hounded for using a slightly larger font than standard, however in this case, it seems a very good idea, as unfortunately the deal is nothing like we though it was :-(

I've claimed loads of redemptions from Hp over the years. They are very specific

This page says the 2.2 model is the applicable cashback.

I've just searched for the product number in google and you are correct it is the 2.2GHZ one. :whistling: Oh well!

If it comes with the ATI Radeon™ HD 3200 then will that play like Rainbow Six Vegas etc!? Will we have to phone ebuyer to find out!?

It WILL definetely come with the ATI processor - check Hp's website for confirmation.

As someone said previously, an AMD chipset would never be coupled with an intel graphics processor - the X3100 GPU is integrated to an Intel motherboard so it would be impossible.
#29
Yeah, the CPU is weak(-ish compared to a Core 2), but for the price of an Acer 5920 with a C2D and 3 GB of RAM this spec is INSANE.

HEAT!

EDIT - CPU slower than I thought and more expensive than I realised - hot, but not burning.

Without the benefit of knowing everything about someone, you sound just like like your having a "judge-people-you-don't-know day" to me, but seeing I don't know you either, that would be just as wild a guess based on one simple post, so I would tend not to do that epeciallu as it isn't often appropriate nor is it suitable for posting on this thread as it isn't anything remotely to do with the deal, and it may well be wrong too.

Either way of looking at it, it is another totally off topic post, so if you don't mind, you don't pass personal comments about me, and I won't pass them about you. I will get on and talk about things what the site is for.. hot deals, not personal attacks or religion, or might it even be personal attacks because of posts on religion! :whistling:

My ignore list is getting a lot of action today, so what's next "new" members having a dig ?

It's not the only thing that's not right, check the part number. Searching google for it only returns the ebuyer page.

Something seems a bit fishy

An off-topic rant about an off-topic rant. Is there no private meesage function you can use to address this?

Whilst you could buy a cheaper laptop with similar specs, they wouldn't be able to rival the build-qulaity and support offered with a HP laptop. For this reason, it's hot for me.

Yes that's what I initially thought...

However - Each of the laptop revisions for the model must have different product numbers. For example if you look under the product number colum on the redemption details page: http://h40059.www4.hp.com/morepc/redemption2.html#red

There are different product numbers for each laptop (look at the ones above this model). Each product number has a different spec and cost for example. Search for KU224ET into google and it's about £600 at other retailers not £399 so it's definetely not the same one.

Bad news I know, still a good deal though.
