It's OK. The processor isn't great and I'd add more RAM. What does your friend want to do?

No not really, but you are at the very low end of the price for a laptop.

The CPU is slow, the memory is only 1Gb, the hard disk is only 160Gb, and it is Vista Home Basic.

But for basic "office" use it is OK, but I would say spend another £30 to £50 and you will get a lot better laptop.

I don't think you should be paying more than this for a single core Sempron laptop in the same way you shouldn't be paying more for the equivalent single core Celeron laptops. You can get much better celeron dual core laptops for not much more and fairly well specced dual cores for £50 to £70 more. Even if your doing basic stuff I think this is a false ecomony.

Don't forget to pay attention to the actual quality of the notebook. Specifications is not everything. The Compaq C60 is (imo) one of the better notebook as far as Keyboard, mousepad and general construction is concerned. It is a real business laptop with dedicated keypad, and housing strength is similar to Lenovo. The Toshiba L300 is quite flimsy in comparison.

1 gb ram is not enough for Vista or Windows 7. You need at least 2gb and 3gb will give you a very smoth running with Vista Basic or Windows 7.

BTW I bought the Compaq C60 with slightly better specs than the model in this thread for my daughter who uses it for Office work and surfing. It runs very well for those tasks.

Completely agree with you about Vista. Anything less then 2Gb and not so much as runs but crawls. I've been running windows 7 on an Acer Aspire One with 1Gb of ram and have to say it runs very well though obviously haven taxed it with lots of apps running at once. would agree 2Gb would be better but unlike Vista appears to be usable on 1Gb.

Personally I would aim for a dual-core processor (hopefully Pentium-Dual or Core 2 duo, but the celeron dual-cores are ok, as probably are amd), 2GB RAM, and a good sized hard disk. Something like http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164844 perhaps.
