I've just looked on amazon and this is c. £250 with good reviews. Looks like a decent deal to me. Anyone in the know care to shed any light before I buy?

Cheers

This is an older model and supports only 1gb ram (most netbooks support 2gb ram)

That's a load of tosh. I had this laptop with 2GB of RAM in it, and here's the crucial memory finder, which states 2GB max.

http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=Compaq%20Mini%20110

This machine is very good, as the keyboard is 92% size of a regular desktop keyboard. It was the first netbook keyboard that I've been able to use properly, and I had 3 netbooks, until I sold this.

It's a great netbook and a good price.

Why then does it state on the Toshiba web site and on The Hut web site 1024mb maximum memory for this model? Are you sure you have the same model? (would be good if it took 2gb)

Whereabouts is it on the Toshiba website? I thought it was HP Compaq...?

And an extra £20-£50 off perhaps for the windows refund! Very cheap and good value!

I can't be sure, but I think this machine does support 2GB. Isn't the 1GB maximum memory thing something to do with Windows XP and Microsoft rules? That is, the hardware supports 2GB but they are only ever allowed to 'declare' 1GB. If I remember right, this machine has one memory slot so you have to replace the 1GB one with a 2GB one.

Decent review of this at CNet:

pet2000 having the usual uninformed swipe at this (what's the issue - it doesn't make you look clever)! It's an excellent machine with a notably good screen and keyboard. 3 cell battery gives 2hrs+ use in real world. Not sure what else you'd want from a netbook. I love mine (£179 at CPW last year).

6 cell available but adds bulk and weight - that's not what a netbook is about.

Crap, Im sorry, I was scrolling down and hit expire. Will this do anything bad?

Just a heads-up: don't mistake this for the much more capable (and expensive) 311c

It hearts when a purchase turns out not as good as it could be after you spend hard earned money and you could have bought something better for less (if you had only listened).:)

Not sure if you are avoiding the question but were you getting confused between HP and Toshiba models... (if so perhaps an apology might be in order - rather than making yourself look more of an a&*e)

This does only support 1GB Ram it even says in the description Memory (Maximum) - 1024MB and also on the HP website I have just checked.

pet2000's comments are helpful to those thinking of purchasing this, as he's pointing out the cons of the deal. Of course, if you OWN this, then pointing out it's downers will sting somewhat. But don't blame the guy for just stating the facts! lol It just looks like a case of VERY sour grapes!

I ordered the HD version of the Dell 1012 for only a tenner more than this in the outlet. I've also been scanning laptop & Netbook deals on here these past couple of weeks, and in my opinion when compared to other recent deals, this would only have been approaching some kind of a great deal if it were £150 delivered. But you can find much better deals for £180!

The biggest downer for this is the 3-cell battery, which would be a total non starter for my needs. This basically tethers the netbook to the house at if you ask me. I wouldn't be ar5ed dragging a few lbs of dead weight with me just for a short stint of browsing or whatever.

The major thing with netbooks is portability, but what's the point if it dies on you within a couple of hours?

I got the exact same model running on a 2Gb RAM (been upgraded by me) running win 7 nice little machine. I even put a 3g card to it after flashing the bios. (febay item number 160452074237) is got a sim card slot under the battery but it only work if you add the 3 card and flash the bios.

What a stupid comment.

So spec's are irrelevant?

I find realistic and honest comments & facts HELPFUL when deciding on a deal, and I'm glad when people chip in with pro's AND con's

Comments like yours I find utterly useless clutter.

It doesn't look a wonderful deal to me - especially compared to the recent black MSi Wind U100+ from Maplin offer (expired now). Even the white MSi Wind U100+ Maplin have which is £30 more than that offer looks to compete strongly with this HP netbook (as it has a 6 cell battery, overclockable, 2 year warranty, bluetooth to trade against the advantages of a better keyboard and colour which is personal taste).

Maplin MSi Wind U100+ White

Just add the cheapest item you can find and use voucher code SECRET15 to bring it to £185... and go through Quidco to get 6% cashback ex VAT.

I think some manuf have started putting 1gb on spec sheets as its a requirement for netbook and win xp - so i've read
but true spec some machines can have ram upgrades

eg Compaq mini 311c says 1gb limit for ram on the official hp website
whereas in reality the machine can be upgraded to 3gb

btw i'd recommend 6cell battery also make netbooks bit more mobile

After reading this and doing a bit of research I ordered I white one yesterday from Maplin 8)

Used the code and it tracked through Quidco at £4.26 so got it for about £180.

Pretty good as I was going to get the HP but went for the MSI as it's better specced ;)
