Fantastic spec for the price, never seen a DV5 model this cheap, even though the processor isnt as good a intel core 2 duo's.

Good graphics, and a blu-ray drive, hdmi etc for under £400, bargain, Dixons refurbished products always seem to be in great condition too, usually just unsealed customer returns within 30 days.

Thanks for the reply.

To be honest I thought that but the description of the TV Out made me think otherwise.

Thanks anyway.

thanks i put march10 in the original post

Garbage456, you may want to edit the post, with the link to currys instead of dixons as its cheaper there with the voucher code 'AFF15'

People are voting the dixons deal hot, where I posted that it cheaper at dixons sister site using a different code, I know its only a £5 difference but every little helps, not everyone clicks into the thread, some just follow the go to deal link, so it would help others if you edit your OP.

The Acer has a slightly better intel processor, much better graphics, and cool little features like a touch panel & finger print reader. It has a 16'' widescreen display which looks lovely on laptops.

The HP on the other hand is lighter and smaller, and looks smart. HP's are also said to be more reliable.

For the extra I would probably go for the acer, just cause Im a gadget freak and like the style of the acer over the HP.
#14
debatable between the 2. Not that fond of acer but Intel processor is better on acer probably.
Price of the hp is budget price at quite a bit better than budget spec. Nice build quality.

HP DV5-1110EM Laptop Review and Specification
November 7, 2008
Every week new laptops are released which is great; some are really good laptops and some are poor laptops. The Hewlett packard DV5-1110EM laptop is a good one. The DV5-1110EM is a perfect Entertainment Laptop. With Blu-Ray drive and Radeon HD3450 graphics card it is equally adapt at watching movies or playing games.

Last week we wrote about the Toshiba l300-13s laptop and commented on how impressed we were with it; it was only £399 so this HP needs to deliver a much bigger punch to justify its £599 - to be honest it does it really well.

Firstly it looks stunning and just looks like a high end laptop. It is black and silver with a twist, it is high gloss silver on the keyboard side and on the lid is piano black - this means that the keyboard space remains relatively finger print free. It is also easy to clean.

The HP DV5 1110EM has quite a bit of power at its heart supplied by the AMD Turion X2 Dual Core processor RM72 that runs at 2.10 Mhz. This little beauty also has a generous 3gb of ram so it really is built for multi tasking.

The 15.4 inch widescreen is crystal clear due to it being HD ready. The laptop also sports a blu ray reader/writer drive so it can play blu ray disks (as well as dvd and cd of course). The write speed is also pretty competitive. Laptops of this size usually have small hard drives but this HP has a 250 GB drive; which is plenty of room in our opinion (and if not is has four usb ports so you can easily bolt on an external hard drive at home or office).

The DV5-111 EM packs in a lot of tech and still manages to stay trim - it only weighs 2.65KG so you won’t break your back carrying it around. The £599 price tag may seem a lot in todays market place but trust us you do get your monies worth (and more).

My laptop is the same design as this, and they have a major flaw with the design.
The mouse pad isn't under the space bar, so when typing you always end up moving the mouse around.

For that reason alone, they arn't worth buying. Its bloody annoying when you're trying to write an essay, and the mouse keeps getting moved around.

Aw sounds bad, my last hp died from overheating....

Right I am fed up looking for laptop deals... ordered this one as it seems good for the price and I specifically have been wanting to avoid buying an ACER in preference for just about anything else.

Cheers!

The DV5 on my desktop right-now (not mine) has a bit of this but the offset is the width of ONE KEY (e.g. < 1 inch) - so it's not really a centering issue, it's more that it has quite a large/sensitive and not that 'recessed' trackpad (this is why I prefer laptops with 'nipples' frankly).

I've used a few laptops with similar issues - the real solution is to type PROPERLY and not rest your wrists on the machine tho :):)

As for the Acer vs this thing - horses for courses - Acers are generally a bit 'plasticier' and I think have a shorter manuf. warranty too - and remember things like battery life and that spare parts/batteries etc tend to be easier to find for HP/Compaqs too...

HP DV5-1110EM Laptop Review and Specification
November 7, 2008

Thanks for posting this review.

The 15.4 inch widescreen is crystal clear due to it being HD ready.

However, this is rubbish.

HD Ready can be applied to any screen with 720 or more vertical lines. 15" laptops have been coming with at least 1024x768 screens as standard for something like six years, and since laptops went widescreen I have NEVER seen a 15.4" laptop with a resolution less than 1280 x 800 - the resolution of this machine.

They're ALL HD ready!!!

The screen may be crystal clear but that line 'due to it being HD ready' is the work of someone who has NO IDEA what they are talking about. Kind of throws the rest of it into question... This guy probably thinks that 'Blu Ray' is the kind of cheese the discs are made of.

HI

any help

Nope I thought it might pop up at the end, but it didn't. I decided to bite the bullet & get it anyway

Can't have it all I suppose!

err - no it's not this and the other machine mentioned are both refurbished items...

Not that it makes a huge amount of difference - worse case is a refurb machine may have a few marks on the casing etc. - and if you're really unhappy you can return em under the DSR within 7 days...

With the £30 off code, that Acer at Currys (£429) is VERY good value indeed - but I prefer my laptops a bit smaller/less faffy and so I'm preferring the HP personally - but it really is horses for courses and I think the Acer gives more per/£

yep nothing at the end

wow, this is an absoulte bargain for the spec you get. great laptop, i know somebody who has one of these.

btw for anybody installing xp on this machine you need to integrate the sata drivers into the disc else the setup will bluescreen as soon as it boots from the disc
#36
just went for it, worth giving it a go as need a laptop with HDMI, need to find out if I plug HDMI to my dell 24" or 37" TV can i turn the laptop screen off, many thanks for any help
#37
Very good spec laptop but im afraid I would never pay nearly £400 for a refurbished one.

Ive had 2 refurb laptops in the past and both havent lasted more than a year.

I could get a great spec laptop brand new for £400
#38
Really good specs but worried about the battery life of this.
Comments from http://www.gadgetsandgizmos.org/hp-dv5-1110em-laptop-review-and-specification/
says that battery life about 50-90mins only during general use.

Have added some heat though. thnx OP
#39
could i get a 9 cell battery for this from anywhere reliable but cheap?

after my last laptop had a battery life of 10 mins 100% full to 0% im a bit skeptical of laptops :)

feeling the need for a new one now tho as the others got a faulty charger and it annoying to use :)
#40
I don't understand the lavish praise on this laptop - it's a great price for a blue-ray playing laptop, but the processor sucks when running Vista.
