£1050 is quite a lot to spend on a laptop, but can get another £150 off the price if you trade in an old laptop or desktop. This is an HP deal http://www.tradeuptohp.com/business/
The computer that you trade in has to be working, and from a list of about 20 brands. *Edit* ]It has to be younger than 4 years old and be a laptop or netbook.
The HP EliteBook 8440p has a i7-620M Dual Core CPU, NVIDIA NVS 3100 graphics and a nice 14" screen with 1600 x 900 resolution, with a matt surface so you don't just see your reflection in it. This price includes a 3 year return to base warranty.
The build quality is really good - a nice solid aluminium case, a nice keyboard, which is supposed to be spill resistant. There is a fingerprint scanner, and a decent range of ports (3 USB, 1 e-Sata, VGA, Display Port (but no direct HDMI) etc)
You can buy laptops which are cheaper, faster and higher resolution, but they are also quite a lot bigger. With a 14" screen, this is just about small enough to be able to use it on an airline-style train seat, or on a plane. I haven't found any with a similar specification and build quality for less.
I have linked to the deal at http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk
but you can also get it for the same price direct from HP by the time that the Quidco cashback is added in. When you do this, there is a wider range of options for warranties and accessories. I paid another £80 to upgrade the warranty to 3 years next day on site. The Quidco transaction has tracked. I placed the order on Monday and received it today.
Only two models of Elitebook 8440p are eligible for the £150 trade in offer, but this is one of them.
