Very poor build quality with these. The keyboard has really terrible flex, while the screen itself is well below average despite being full HD resolution. It also runs extremely hot and is nowhere near as thin as it deceptively looks in photo's of the front. The speakers aren't bad at all though as far as keyboard speakers go, while the machine itself is fairly quiet. You can also play games on it with the GTX 840M card, but medium settings on most recent games will be the absolute most you can hope for.

As a former owner I didn't enjoy the laptop at all so I won't vote it hot, but for £650 I've seen far worse deals posted.
Seems like this might not be a good deal looking the temp.

Can anyone point me to a decent spec'd laptop with a quad core i7 in thae £650 price range?

Unfortunately, the only laptops that can use a quad core i7 in a sensible way are macbook pros (related to battery life and how 'cool' they remain). You can get a good quad core from PC Specialist (check the Ultranote II - 15"). I reckon the battery life will be a bit less than 2 hours if you're using it intensively, but I would ask in their forums to other people who have the same one. And be sure to select a matte display!!!

As for my experience with HP, I got a similar model and returned it immediately (15-j144na) as the screen quality was too poor. There was no position from where I could get consistent colours across the screen, either the backlight bleed would wash the colours at the bottom of the screen or if I rocked the laptop (as otherwise there was no way to see properly text at the bottom of the screen) the top part of the screen became considerable darker.
