The graphics card appears to be shared as opposed to dedicated memmory so not sure how great that is spec wise.

The spec is unbelivable.

A slow AMD 2.1GHz tri-core CPU plus integrated graphics for £400 is unbelievably average.

rubbish really

For anyone who cares;

-the CPU is on par with the base i3's which have more power than 95%+ of the population needs
-the gpu is the HD4250 which offers 75% of the power of a nvidia 310 so its fantastic for anyone who isnt big into gaming

Price wise, I dont think its an incredible deal but it is not a "rubbish" laptop. It is actually a VERY good piece of kit and if you disagree, please point out why.

Anadtech is a highly respected website and they say:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3968/asus-x72d-three-cores-no-waiting/7

“The problems start to creep in when performance metrics are taken into account. The Phenom II N830 in action starts to explain why most manufacturers are hesitant to send out AMD-based notebooks for reviews. The N830 isn't terrible, but at some points it even struggles to catch up with Intel's ultra low-voltage chips. At the same time, it draws substantially more power, and the chipset it's paired with only exacerbates things. This only points to something that's been a continual problem for AMD for years now: they need to seriously step their game up in the mobile market.”

Performance is below average, battery life is well below Intel which is why it’s priced low. Sometimes things are cheap for a reason, because they are second rate.
Personally it’s the high power consumption and low battery life that makes this particular AMD platform extremely unappealing.
They’ve been playing 3rd fiddle to Intel for ages now in the mobile sector but I think AMD have some good products out next year so finally there will be some competition I hope.

HD4250 in some tests struggles with HD graphics; it is very much better than intels GMA gpus at gaming; but as you say if you're big into gaming it won't be the gpu for you.

Certainly a few years back we were all content with much less powerful CPUs; but most of the population now have much greater and increasingly greater computing needs; running iTunes etc, processing images from their 14mp digital cameras and HD or even full HD video to name a few.

I don't think it's a VERY good bit of kit as you say; but it is a good average price.

I just pointed out that your statement 'The spec is unbelivable' was hyperbole.

Im using an old 2 ghz core2 with an ati x1400 which, compared to this laptop, is awful. Although gaming is pretty much out of the question, it does multiple other tasks happily. I run photoshop cs3 processing some very large images comfortably, i have never had it lag playing any HD content and recently it has been running an android emulator while I compile. What does the general public do that uses more power than those tasks? Surely Itunes hasnt been that badly written....

That said, on personal preference, I would want an intel for this kind of price as (as said previously) amd has been left in intels wake in the laptop domain.
